Zone development

Forewind has the objective to achieve development consent for an agreed target installed capacity of 7.2GW of offshore wind farm projects by 2020. To ensure that the work associated with meeting this objective is managed effectively, and to more evenly distribute demands on stakeholders and the supply chain, Forewind has proposed to develop the zone sequentially in stages, known as tranches.


The Zone Appraisal and Planning (ZAP) process used both available information and the outcome of stakeholder consultations to identify the optimum location of these tranches offshore.  Tranche A was identified 2010, Tranche B was defined in 2011 and Tranche C in 2013.

Within each tranche, Forewind has identified a number of project sites, each with a capacity of up to 1.2GW.

The area of each tranche has been defined larger than the footprint required for the individual projects to ensure that the location of those projects remains flexible throughout the data collection and stakeholder consultation phase. The identification of the individual projects within each tranche has taken into account stakeholder discussions and had due consideration to environmental and engineering factors.

The location of the cable routes and onshore infrastructure continues to be significantly influenced by the grid connections agreed in negotiations with National Grid. As Forewind received these grid connection offers, the onshore ZAP process was the first step taken to identify the optimum route for the export cable, from the offshore tranche/project to the onshore substation(s).

Events

Open-floor and issue-specific hearings for the examination of the development consent order application for Dogger Bank Creyke Beck were concluded in July 2014.

The Planning Inspectorate will hold open-floor and issue-specific hearings for the examination of the development consent order application for Dogger Bank Teesside A&B from October 2014. Details of these hearings can be found on the Events page of this website.
