Small Ships Race is a good warm up for taking on the Tall Ships later this Summer

Young people from Sail Training organisations around the UK have travelled to Scotland this week to take part in the Small Ships Race organised by ASTO and RYA Scotland. Three of the vessels are later participating in a major Tall Ships Regatta at the end of August.

A total of nine vessels started the race on Tuesday with around 120 young people aged between 12 and 25 on board from a wide range of backgrounds.

Challenge Wales, Maybe and Swan will all be honing their racing skills this week ahead of taking part in the Falmouth to Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta from 28 August, organised by Sail Training International. Each has space for 12 young people on board and have travelled from Cardiff (Challenge Wales), Shetland (Swan) and the east coast of Yorkshire (Maybe) to take part.

They are each very different vessels with their own interesting history but now with Sail Training in common.

Sail Training celebrates the Commonwealth Games

9 Sail Training vessel will take part in a Small Ships Race in the Clyde next week, to celebrate the start of the Commonwealth Games. 150 young people will take part in the event followed by a cruise in company with up to 200 other vessels that are gathering in Greenock to take part in the Commonwealth Flotilla into the heart of Glasgow.

Young people set to embark on adventure by sea thanks to latest funding phase

The Scottish Government today announced that £375,000 of CashBack for Communities funding is being awarded to Ocean Youth Trust Scotland to create life changing opportunities for young people across the country.

The money is the latest award from the third phase of CashBack funding, which has so far seen over £74m invested and committed to projects and initiatives across Scotland since its inception in 2007.

National sail training charity, Ocean Youth Trust Scotland, will use the grant to fund New Horizons, a three year national project to provide sail training opportunities for 576 young people in Scotland.

New book celebrates Tall Ships and Sail Training

A new book celebrating and promoting tall ships and Sail Training - "Tall Ships Today"  is now published and available to buy and preview through the STI website via a special Tall Ships Today page. A third of the cover price from all purchases of the book ordered through the STI site will be used to help disadvantaged and/or disabled young people benefit from a Sail Training voyage.
