Garmin today and the last 25 years
1989
Garmin is founded by Gary Burrell and Dr. Min Kao
Over the course of the last 25 years, Garmin pioneered many new product categories, evolving into a global technology leader for automotive, mobile, outdoor, marine, fitness and aviation products.
1993
Garmin introduced the first GPS with a moving map
Garmin introduced the first GPS with a moving map (GPS 95) and went on to pioneer the GPS market for automobiles with the first portable mapping GPS for automobiles (StreetPilot®).
1994
Industry’s earliest GPS Chartplotters
Since the beginning, Garmin has also been a leader in the marine market, designing some of the industry’s earliest GPS chartplotters (GPSMAP® 210). Today there is a state-of-the-art integrated Garmin Marine Network.
1997
Garmin innovated the digital cockpit
A stalwart in the general aviation industry, Garmin innovated the digital cockpit, first with the GNS® 430 and 530 and has grown into the Part 25 business jet market with the G5000™ glass cockpit (2010).
1998
First car sat nav announced – StreetPilot®
Featured a top-down street map on a black and white LCD screen and maps on data cartridges of 8 or 16 MB. Detailed routes could be manually created in software and there were no spoken directions.
1999
First dedicated walking handheld - eTrex®
The yellow eTrex went on to become the bestselling Garmin GPS handheld. The current incarnation - the eTrex 10 - retains the original eTrex “yellow” colour but with many more features than the original.
2000
Garmin went public on the NASDAQ stock market
Garmin went public on the NASDAQ stock market in 2000 and became a component of the S&P; 500 index in 2012.
2003
First wrist-based GPS announced
The Forerunner® 101 used the GPS signal to calculate time, pace and distance. Current models include the Forerunner 910XT triathlon watch and the Forerunner 620 with running dynamics.
2005
nüvi® 300 series
The nüvi 300 series was the first modern-shaped sat nav made by Garmin. The now familiar slim rectangular shape meant that the sat nav could easily fit in a pocket or handbag.
2006
First cycle computers - Edge® 205/305
In addition to time, speed and distance, additional sensors were available for cadence and heart rate. Recent models like the Edge 1000 have maps, give turn-by-turn directions and record power information.
2007
Garmin Connect web site launched
To complement its rapidly expanding range of fitness watches and cycle computers, Garmin launched the Garmin Connect website to enable customers to upload and share their fitness data.

GPSMAP 5000 series
With the introduction of the GPSMAP® 5000 series with touch screen interface, Garmin set a new standard for making sophisticated and highly advanced technology easy to use.

BlueChart g2 Vision
Built on the success of BlueChart® introduced in 2003, BlueChart g2 Vision took marine navigation to a whole new level with automatic route calculations, 3D views and more.

First touchscreen walking handheld - Oregon®
The first walking handheld device with a touchscreen. The touchscreen makes device operation much quicker and easier, especially for users that need to enter co-ordinates and information on the go.

First dedicated golfing product - Approach® G5
Garmin enters the golfing market with a handheld device with course maps, shot distance, scorecard and distance to the pin. This is followed by a range of golfing watches and handheld devices.

First triathlon watch – Forerunner® 310XT
Garmin’s first watch suitable for all three triathlon disciplines with the ability to measure distance while swimming, as well as running and cycling features.

New Markets - VIRB® and vívofit
Garmin enters the Action Camera and Wellness markets with the VIRB and VIRB Elite action cameras and the vívofit wellness band. Using 25 years of skill and innovation to create exciting new products.
