Meet your May “On The Rise” nominees!

In our monthly On The Rise program, we identify four partners whose channels drive significant YouTube watch time but haven’t yet reached the 100,000 subscriber mark. Thanks to your help, we’re sharing four partners who each drive a lot of watch time on YouTube but still have a ways to go before they hit that milestone. This May, our nominees have had their viewers glued to the screen with videos about paranormal activity, the balance of baking and exercise, reptile behavior, and all kinds of creative crafting.

And they could use your help! You can help these nominees jumpstart their audience development and channel growth. Review their videos below, vote for your favorite here, and one of these candidates will have the opportunity to be featured across YouTube later this month. In addition to your votes, each channel will be evaluated on criteria such as viewer engagement and channel optimization techniques to decide which partner we’ll feature.

In past months, featured On The Rise partners like ManjulasKitchen and PsychoSoprano have gained many subscribers and seen their careers take off, in large part due to your support. This month’s poll will be open until May 15, 5pm PT, so don’t forget to vote for your favorite channel. Check back to see which channel will be featured on May 28.

PsychoSoprano is your March featured partner on the rise!

Congratulations to Colleen Ballinger of PsychoSoprano, our featured “On The Rise” partner this March. You can find her videos featured on our YouTube channel today, along with Google+, Facebook, and Twitter.

Hailing from southern California, Colleen has spent several years growing her YouTube audience and is a successful comedienne. She guarantees that you’ll enjoy a lot of laughs on PsychoSoprano, where she uploads vlogs, skits, character sketches, and “a lot of awkwardness” across two weekly shows. You can tune in for random fun videos every Friday; or, if you have a question for Colleen, you can submit it and check out her Tuesday show, ‘Colleen’s Corner,’ where she takes the time to interact and talk with her audience. In addition to PsychoSoprano, Colleen runs the mirandasings08 channel where she hosts her music content - she’s a professional singer who tours and teaches as well.

Here are a few words from Colleen:
Thank you so much for all of your votes... I am so excited to have been chosen! I try my hardest to keep my subscribers entertained with comedic skits, crazy characters, fun vlogs, singing, and a lot of awkwardness twice a week. I love building relationships with my viewers and want them to feel like my friends and not just my audience so no topics are off limits. You never know what you're gonna find on my channel, but I guarantee you'll smile a lot. :) Thanks again for voting for me! It means more than you know!

DevinandErica are your February featured rising partner!

Congratulations to Devin and Erica, whose YouTube channel DevinandErica is our featured “On The Rise” partner this February. These loving parents have documented their family’s development, creativity, and silliness on YouTube for over three years, and today they’re featured in the spotlight on the YouTube home channel, Google+, Facebook, and Twitter.

This channel was born when Erica was pregnant with the couple’s eldest daughter, whom they affectionately refer to as ‘Baby Bug.’ Their ‘reality show’ on YouTube has grown to include a variety of content ranging from vlogs to homemade skits to original songs, and this fun-loving family has developed a dedicated following. In fact, support from their viewers helped them with the expense of a second IVF cycle, and Devin, Erica, and Bug welcomed baby ‘DudeL’ about six months ago. After more than three years and 300 videos on YouTube, Devin and Erica have amassed a library of heartwarming moments - get to know their family with channels classics like the ABCs ‘Baby Jam' and Devin’s baby proposal, and then check out some of the other fun videos in the playlist linked below.

Here are a few words directly from Devin:
We would like to thank our subscribers first and foremost. Without you, we would not have come so far within this community. For that our utmost appreciation will now and always play the biggest role. Our subscribers have helped us grow as a YouTube Partner, as well as a family by helping give us a son just by watching and following our crazy family. For those who have not seen us before, our channel is packed full of family fun! We do vlogs, skits, and original songs about our crazy life and family in Charlotte, NC. We like to have fun and would love to have you with us! Thank you for watching and we look forward to you joining our journey.
If you’ve enjoyed this monthly On The Rise blog series, and want to see more rising YouTube partners, check out our Google Hangouts with past featured partners on the YouTube Creators channel.

A friendly reminder and monetization advice

We’re always working to bring to you the latest tips and updates so you can make the most of your YouTube experience. One of the benefits of being a YouTube partner is your ability to monetize your uploaded content, and we have a few best practices and guidelines to help you understand the monetization process. Read on to review some of the commonly-asked questions and our suggestions for how you can maximize your YouTube earnings!

Keep in mind these monetization basics:

  • Create an AdSense account. You can enable video monetization and display ads without associating an AdSense account with YouTube, but in order to be paid you’ll need to create - and associate - an AdSense account.
  • Enable relevant ad formats. Set your monetization ad defaults, and allow all ad types that are relevant for your videos.
  • Look at the monetization symbol next to your video.
    • Videos with a grey “$” button are not yet monetized.
    • Videos with a green “$” button have been enabled for monetization
    • Videos with an orange “!” symbol next to them indicate that YouTube might need more information to approve your video for monetization. In that case, check your Video Manager and your e-mail.
  • Make sure you own commercial use rights before you monetize.
    • Whenever possible, take the opportunity to be creative - create your own unique audio and visuals!
    • If you want to monetize a video that contains audio or visuals you didn’t personally create, you’ll need the content creator to provide express written permission for commercial use. If you have written permission to use third-party material, be sure to mention/include it when you publish a video or when asked to provide information for monetization.
    • Check the licenses for any audio you include, and where possible, use royalty-free music that's licensed for commercial use.
    • Remember that fair use is a tricky subject. Don't assume you can monetize third-party content because you’ve claimed it as fair use.

Going forward, don’t forget to:

  • Keep your AdSense account in good standing. Encouraging viewers to click on your ads, or clicking on them yourself, is strictly prohibited. Learn more here.
  • Do your homework to understand whether you actually own commercial use rights. Purchasing a song, game, or program may not mean you own the rights to monetize, and there could be consequences for claiming content you don't own.
  • Create family-friendly content that advertisers want to sponsor. Keep in mind some advertisers have a family audience and may not want their ads appearing next to content containing profanity, offensive, or derogatory language/images.
  • Review our policies. Make sure you’re familiar with our spam policies and avoid spamming your viewers.
  • Follow our audience development best practices outlined in the Creator Playbook to build your fan base and increase views and watch time. Using misleading tags, thumbnails, and metadata may give your fans a negative viewing experience, reduce your watch time, and could affect your monetization status.

Thanks again for helping make the YouTube partner community so vibrant. We hope you find these tips useful, and if you have any additional questions, don’t forget about the resources YouTube makes available: monetization tips and audience development best practices abound in the YouTube Help Center, the Playbook, the Partner Forum, the Creator Hub, the YouTube Creators channel and here on the YouTube Creator Blog.

Our January featured On The Rise partner is MyCupcakeAddiction!

Congratulations to Elise Strachan, the master chef for this month’s "On The Rise” featured partner channel, MyCupcakeAddiction. Not only is her channel the first featured in 2013, but it’s also the first Australian channel we’ve featured in the program, and Elise was recently appointed as one of the 15 Next How-To Gurus! MyCupcakeAddiction hosts tutorials on how to decorate and make cupcakes, cake pops and other sweet treats, and is in the spotlight on YouTube’s own channel today. Check it out to see some of Elise’s delicious creations!

Elise’s kitchen is based in Queensland, Australia, where she’s been cooking up sweet treats for several years. She often bakes for private events and weddings, on top of selling her cupcakes at a local market twice a week. In October 2011, she decided to expand beyond her Gold Coast clientele by producing videos on YouTube to inspire bakers worldwide. Now, no matter where you live, you can find do-it-yourself tips and tutorials for fun creations like Elise’s Angry Birds cake pops, stiletto heel cupcakes, or even a giant cupcake pinata!

Here are a few words from Elise:
This is an exciting accolade for our little channel, and a huge thank you goes out to the best subscribers in the world for your votes and support throughout voting week. We aim to provide high quality, step-by-step instructional videos showing you how to create the weird and wonderful out of cupcakes and cakepops. MyCupcakeAddiction has something sweet and stunning for any occasion. Make sure you head over to our channel to catch all the latest uploads: now bringing you 3 new tutorials each week!

RichardGaleFilms is October’s YouTube Partner On The Rise!

Congrats to Richard Gale from RichardGaleFilms, which is YouTube’s “On The Rise” spotlight partner this October. Richard’s channel is featured today on the YouTube homepage, thanks to your support and his strong channel optimization efforts.

A three-time Emmy award winner, Richard has been writing, directing, and producing films and TV shows for decades. His work spans a variety of genres including documentaries, suspense thrillers, parodies and comedy, as well as horror. Richard’s most recent project, the comedic horror short film, ‘The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon,’ has received multiple film festival awards and driven his YouTube viewership as well. The short film’s legacy lives on in a YouTube mini-series about the main character, Jack, and you'll just have to check out the channel to see how the story evolves.

Here are a few words from Richard himself:
I became a YouTube partner almost by accident--as a filmmaker making shorts for film festivals, I had a 10-minute comedy about a killer with a spoon (Horribly Slow Murderer) that had completed its festival run, and I uploaded it to hopefully give it some additional exposure. To my astonishment, the short went viral, and was seen by more people in one day than in a year of film festivals. So we expanded the story into a series, and it continues to develop a dedicated following. We are extremely grateful to all of our awesome fans and supporters, who voted for our channel and continue to enjoy our films. Thank you!!!!! We've got exciting things on the horizon, so stay spooned!
If you’ve enjoyed this monthly On The Rise blog series and want to see more rising YouTube partners, check out our On The Rise channel. Keep an eye out for next month’s blog post, as your channel may be the next one On The Rise!

Using annotations to change the world

The YouTube for Good team is always looking for ways to turn video views into action -- like dollars donated, petitions signed, and laws changed. So today, we’re excited to announce a new way to use your videos to spur action and give back.

In April, we announced the ability to crowdsource funds for creative projects with video annotations linking to Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Now we want to help you fundraise and raise awareness for causes you care about by teaming up with Causes, Change.org, RocketHub and DonorsChoose.org. You can now add annotations to your videos that send viewers directly to projects on these sites, which all use the power of crowds to create social change.

We’ve already seen some great YouTube creators do their part to give back. For example, the VlogBrothers (John and Hank Green) organize the YouTube community to upload videos and fundraise for their favorite causes every December. This event has become known as Project for Awesome because so many people participated that the videos actually took over the YouTube homepage in a "flurry of awesomeness." And YouTube comedian Kevin Wu, aka KevJumba, has been using YouTube to raise awareness and donating 100% of his Jumbafund channel’s ad revenue to build a school in Kenya with The Supply, a non-profit supporting education.

We hope annotations help you support the causes you care about, from encouraging services for veterans to helping Kenyan youth preserve wildlife to teaching students about electricity to ending seal slaughter. To use the feature, go to your Video Manager, select a video, click “Edit” and select Annotations. You’ll see the following screen, with an option to link to one of these sites. You can find more information on annotations in our help center.

Help these non-profit “On The Rise” nominees reach the homepage

Each month, we identify four YouTube partners whose channels have recently experienced significant growth but haven’t yet reached the 100,000 subscriber count for our On The Rise program. This month’s featured partners still have a ways to go to hit that mark, but we’re excited about the impact they’ve had on - and beyond - YouTube. Each of our June nominees represents a non-profit organization fighting for an important cause: strengthening art knowledge and creative thinking, finding a cure for cancer, preventing crisis and suicide among LGBTQ youth, and ending world hunger.

And these partners could use your help in a few different ways! As you learn more about these organizations, you can help spread awareness about the causes they represent so they can have an even greater impact. You can also help them grow their YouTube presence, starting with the opportunity for one of these partners to be featured on the YouTube homepage. Check out their videos below and vote for your favorite in the top right corner of the official YouTube blog. In addition to your votes, each channel will be evaluated on criteria such as viewer engagement and channel optimization techniques to decide which partner will be featured on the homepage, Google+, Facebook and Twitter at the end of the month.

In past months past on the rise nominees, partners like Strskillschool and jakatak69 have gained many subscribers thanks to your support. The poll will be open until June 12th at 5pm PT, so don’t forget to vote for your favorite channel. Check back to see who secured the homepage feature on June 25th.

art21org
Founded in 1997, Art21 is an organization dedicated to contemporary art education and inspiring creative thinking. Their channel features episodes of their award-winning public television production, “Art21 - Art in the Twenty-First Century,” as well as shorter-format videos of contemporary art and artists.

su2c
“This is where the end of cancer begins” is the mantra of the Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) organization, which funds and unites scientists to speed up cancer research and find a cure. Their channel features videos promoting campaign PSAs as well as details about their research grant program and recipients.

TheTrevorProject
The Trevor Project was founded in 1998 to provide a lifeline for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth and has since become one of the largest organizations dedicated to crisis and suicide prevention for the LGBTQ community. Their channel features Trevor Project PSAs as well as celebrity interviews and “It Gets Better” videos.

WorldFoodProgram
The World Food Programme is the largest humanitarian agency in the world dedicated to the fight against hunger. Founded in 1961, the organization is part of the United Nations system. Their channel features videos from the Sahel Hunger Crisis and footage from their work around the world.

Jakatak69 is May’s On The Rise YouTube partner

Congratulations to Jack Scalfani of Jakatak69! Jack is YouTube’s featured “On The Rise” partner for May and takes the stage in the “Spotlight” section of our homepage today.

Jack is just a regular guy who fell into his cooking career without any formal training. He worked for awhile as a DJ for a radio station, after which he decided to move into talent management. Among his clients was a chef who eventually moved on and left Jack with a couple hundred pounds of spices. Jack decided to make his own barbeque sauce from what he had, and in 2000 launched “The Best BBQ Sauce You’ll Ever Taste.” He started producing simple “How To” videos on YouTube to promote his sauce. Since then, he’s expanded into easy-to-make recipes, cooking tips, and honest product reviews. Check out his channel to see what he thinks about the Big Top Cupcake or learn how to make Lazy Man’s Pulled Pork Sandwiches and Red Lobster Cheddar Biscuits.

Here are a few words from Jack:
I want to first say thanks to YouTube... I am grateful for all the tools you have provided to help me grow my channel to what it is today. There are training videos, playbook videos, creator hangouts, city wide meetups, partnership support, video editing tools, bulletin systems to reach all your subscribers in just one click and so much more. The best part is that all of these YouTube tools are free. I am excited to be apart of a food category that is just about to explode on YouTube. You have inspired me to reach out and collaborate with other YouTube artists. Working together is more important than you think. So reach out to someone, build good content and broadcast yourself. And always remember YouTube is the new TV. God Bless and please subscribe to the COOKING WITH JACK SHOW

An update on subscriber counts

Over the past couple weeks, we’ve heard from creators who have seen decreases in their public subscriber counts, so we wanted to keep you in the loop about what to expect on your channel.

This February, we began a process to improve the accuracy of your subscriber counts, to give you the best data possible on your channel. Recently, we’ve extended this process by removing additional closed and inactive accounts from our system, which means these closed accounts are being deducted from subscriber counts. None of the accounts we’re removing from our system are active, so these changes to subscriber counts will not cause any change in viewership. The number of accounts removed varies from day to day, so you may notice unusual declines in subscriber counts on one day followed by a return to normal performance the next day.

We plan to complete the account removals process over the coming weeks, with a significant number of closed accounts being removed on one day. We will update this blog when we have an expected date of completion, and on that date it’s possible to see a drop in your public subscriber counts as well as in YouTube Analytics. How much this will affect your channel will vary, but the longer you’ve been on YouTube the more likely it is you have inactive subscribers.

These account removals have already started to take effect in public counts and API counts (through sites like Vidstatsx), but we will not be able to update the counts in YouTube Analytics until we have completed the account removals. For the time being, YouTube Analytics only captures subscribes and unsubscribes from active users, which is a more meaningful metric for tracking engagement with your channel than the public counts.

We want your subscriber counts and all other analytics to be consistent and accurate, so thanks for bearing with us as we make these improvements.

Improving rights management at YouTube

Copyright protection is of the utmost importance to Google and YouTube. That’s why our team works diligently to develop and improve the copyright protection tool for your videos called Content ID. Today we have updated features of Content ID to share with you, but first, a refresher on how Content ID works.

Content ID allows rights holders to automatically detect uploaded content that contains potentially infringing works. This is possible through a system that creates a digital “fingerprint” of a video when it’s uploaded to YouTube. These fingerprints are automatically compared to partner-provided references. In case of a match, the rights holder can choose to monetize it, block it from the site or keep track of viewing metrics. Because of the vast scale of YouTube (remember: 1 hour of content is uploaded to the site every second), this is an automated process.

On to the news—the video fingerprint now offers better protection against copyright infringements, specifically in the form of cropped and mirrored videos. Below are examples of new matches against modified videos.

      Partner-provided video              User-provided video

We’ll keep investigating new ways to give rights holders ever better tools, while supporting new forms of creative expression. More information about Content ID is available at www.youtube.com/t/contentid.
