Former World Champion wins second in a Row
Tempest World Championship
Lake Neuchatel
After five races held at the Tempest Worlds, the old champion is the new one. Christian SCHAEFER and Andreas MADER from Germany won the World Championship of the former Olympic Tempest class in Grandson on the lake of Neuchatel.
With winds varying from a force 1-2 and up to a force 5 the 52 competitors from 6 Nations were tested in all their skills of sailing light and shifty winds and on the other day a strong breeze with choppy waves. Racing concluded yesterday, when the double World Champions were crowned.
Starting with a 14 place finish in race one Schafer didn't seem to be able to defend his title but following a score-line that included a first, second and two thirds in the following races he and his crew Andreas MADER produced an awesome comeback.
Second place also went to Germany with Rolf BAEHR and Thomas OLBRICH from Berlin, only three points behind Shaefer. Third place went to the Swiss team of Pierre MAEDER and Andreas DIETRICH.
Now the class is looking forward to their next world championship in La Rochelle, France in 2004 and to their 40th anniversary in 2005. Full results are available on the event website at the address below.
