China Coast Race Week

The 25 stalwarts who turned out for Day 3 of the China Coast Regatta were rewarded with good breeze, sunny skies and the best day’s racing of the series.
Observing the steady 18-20 knot winds, Race Officer Jimmy Farquar set a long windward / leeward course for the IRC Divisions, and a shortened geometric course for the HKPN boats.

Apart from Heatseeker, who was OCS, all boats made a clean start and Jelik soon forged into a commanding lead, taking line honours nearly a full leg ahead of Free Fire. Many of the boats experienced problems in dropping their spinnakers at the bottom mark, with Juggernaut and Heatseeker both retiring, and Time losing valuable minutes to drop into tenth place in Division A.

Going into Race 2, an 18 mile Islands course, Stella was in an unassailable position for Division winner with four bullets but looking to make it a quin of wins - China Blues II had been starting aggressively all regatta, and the final race was no exception. Jelik was looking for a clean sweep of line honours, while Ffree Fire was aiming for their first win.

Jelik showed her dominance over day courses, claiming line honours ten minutes ahead of Free Fire on a 2 hour race, but China Blues II succeeded in upsetting Stella's unblemished record by taking first place on corrected time by 1min14s. Ffree Fire's Sam Chan will be relishing the opportunity to challenge Frank Pong's Jelik in the 355nm offshore Hainan Race, which starts on Wednesday.
In IRC Division B, both races were fiercely contested, with Fox In Soxs and Wild At Heart's trading first and second places in the two races. Fox in Soxs took the Div B title with three bullets and two second places, ahead of Wild At Heart.

The closest race of the day had to be race 2 of the HKPN class. After three races, Johan II and Bewitched were tied in first place, so the Regatta title was resting on the final race. As Johan II took line honours, Bewitched could be seen coming in to the finish line. After 8 minutes of suspense, Bewitched finished with a corrected time only 20 seconds inside Johan II to take the overall HKPN title.
