The team in their OnBoard rash vests

Intermediate racing course thrills OnBoarders

OnBoard club members improve their racing skills

An intermediate racing course run by Southampton Water Activities Centre (SWAC) during last October’s half-term holiday proved very popular. A total of ten youth sailors took part in the five-day course, and all came away sporting their winning team OnBoard rash vests.

The first three days were spent working on racing techniques in the River Itchen. Then on the Thursday, there was a regatta, with the youngsters racing against Hamble River Sailing Club (HRSC), just outside RYA House!

On the Friday, it was all to play for when HRSC sailors went over to Weston Shelf at the mouth of the River Itchen for the final day. The winds were strong but all remained eager to keep at the front of the fleet.

Sienna and Luke from Team SWAC took home first place and were really pleased with their achievement, albeit a little tired.

The SWAC OnBoard club will start up again in February when the temperature (hopefully) starts to warm up. Sports Development Leader Max Bradbury-Knight can’t wait to get the youngsters back on the water, and they can’t wait to get back to racing in the spring!
