"The support I have received from the National Lottery has been a big part of my successful swimming career. Without the funding to help cover my training and equipment cost I wouldn't be six-time Paralympic champion. Thank you to everyone who buys a Lottery ticket."
Sascha Kindred
Disability swimming receives the highest level of investment from UK Sport of any Paralympic discipline. This investment increased by more than £3.5m from the Beijing to the London cycle in order to help the large squad prepare for London 2012.
At the Beijing Paralympic Games, the disability swimming squad won an incredible 41 medals, including 11 gold. Teenager Ellie Simmonds, then 13 and the youngest member of ParalympicsGB, was one of the stars with her double gold medal winning performance in the 100m and 400m freestyle (S6 category).
Simmonds is one of 33 ‘Podium’ level funded athletes on UK Sport’s World Class Performance Programme (WCPP), with another 15 ‘Development’ level athletes also in receipt of National Lottery funded Athlete Personal Awards, designed to allow athletes to devote more time to training and preparation and to realise their full sporting potential.
Six-time Paralympic champions James Anderson and Sascha Kindred were two of the first athletes to enter the WCPP when UK Sport was set up in 1997 and have both been in receipt of National Lottery funding since then.
As well as direct support for the athletes, UK Sport’s Major Events team supported the successful bid for Glasgow to host the 2015 IPC Swimming European Championships. The event will be staged at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, the same pool that will host the swimming competitions of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, and will be funded by up to £300,000 of National Lottery investment. More than 500 swimmers from over 40 countries are expected to compete at the event, which was the first international Paralympic event secured for the UK post London 2012.
