HRH The Princess Royal – President

HRH Princess Royal has been the President of the British Olympic Association (BOA) since 1983.The Princess Royal won two silver medals in 1975 and one gold medal in 1971 at the European Eventing Championships and is the only member of the British Royal Family to have competed in the Olympic Games, in Montreal 1976. The Princess Royal has been an IOC Member since her appointment in 1988.

Lord Sebastian Coe - Chairman

A highly respected international sport leader who was the driving force behind the successful London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Lord Sebastian Coe was elected as Chairman of the British Olympic Association on 7th November 2012. He also serves as Chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), having previously been Chairman of the London 2012 bid company.

Seb is a double Olympic Champion and 12-time world record holder in athletics. He won gold in the 1500m and silver in the 800m at both the Moscow 1980 and Los Angeles 1984 Games. He retired from competitive athletics in 1990 and became a Conservative MP and Private Secretary to William Hague. In 2002 he was made a Peer – Lord Coe of Ranmore. He received a knighthood in the 2006 New Year's Honours List.

Seb is also a Vice-President of the International Association of Athletics, Chair of the Sport Honours Committee and is the Prime Minister's Olympic and Paralympic Games Legacy Ambassador.

David Hemery – Vice Chairman

David is a former British athlete who won gold in the 400m Hurdles at the Mexico City 1968 Olympic Games, along with a silver and bronze medal in the 4x400m relay and 400m Hurdles respectively in Munich 1972. In 1998 he was elected as the first president of UK Athletics, a position he held until 2003.

Bill Sweeney – Chief Executive Officer

Bill Sweeney joined the British Olympic Association as Chief Executive Officer in November 2013. A highly accomplished sports business executive with more than 25 years’ experience developing some of the most recognised and successful brands in sport, Bill is responsible for directing the day-to-day activities of the BOA, including overseeing preparations for the Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the inaugural European Games in 2015, and the many other international, multi-sport events in which Team GB competes.

A versatile athlete, Bill represented and captained his UAU football side at university and played rugby for Aberdeenshire and Roslyn Park. He is also an accomplished golfer and skier.

David Sparkes

David is currently the CEO of British Swimming. He was elected to the BOA Board in October 2009.

Niels de Vos

Niels became Chief Executive of UK Athletics in 2007. Prior to that, he was the CEO of the Sale Sharks Rugby Union Club and was Commercial Director for the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Niels was elected to the BOA Board in October 2009.

Richard Leman

Richard is a former British hockey player who was a member of the gold medal winning squad at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games. That team remain the only British team to date to win a gold medal in hockey. He became President of the Great Britain Hockey Board in January 2008. Richard was elected to the BOA Board in March 2007.

Sarah Treseder

Sarah became Chief Executive of the Royal Yachting Association in 2010. Sarah was elected to the BOA Board in November 2011.

Hew Chalmers

Hew has been a director of British Curling Ltd since its inception four years ago. He was Great Britain Olympic Team Manager in 2002, Team Co-ordinator in 2006 and Women’s Team Manager for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. He has considerable experience of high performance sport having coached national teams to medal success at European and World Curling Championships. Hew was elected to the BOA Board in November 2010.

Sarah Winckless – Chair of BOA Athletes’ Commission

Sarah is a former British rower who won bronze in the double sculls at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, and was twice world champion in 2005 and 2006. She participated in three consecutive Olympic Games and seven World Championships, before announcing her retirement from rowing in 2009.

Simon Clegg

Simon Clegg CBE is one of the UK’s most experienced sports businessmen and leaders. He has been Chief Executive of the British Olympic Association, Ipswich Town Football Club and a European Youth Olympic Festival as well as managing a national ski team and Team GB athletes at 12 Olympic and Olympic Winter Games.

As a board member of the London bid team, Simon was one of three British signatories on the host city contract in Singapore and subsequently a board member of LOCOG until he resigned on leaving the British Olympic Association after the Beijing Olympic Games. Simon was made an Officer of the British Empire in 2001 for his management of Team GB at the 2000 Olympic Games and a Commander of the British Empire in 2005 for his contribution to the London Olympic bid.

Non-Executive Directors

Denise Jagger

Denise is a partner at Eversheds International Law Firm, where she specialises in strategic planning and client service delivery. With a portfolio of independent directorships built up over 20 years in public and private companies and charitable organisations, she is a highly experienced corporate finance lawyer and general manager. Denise joined the BOA Board as a non-executive Director in May 2011.

Andy Anson

Andy was the Chief Executive at England 2018 Ltd, the company behind The FA’s bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Previously he was the commercial director of Manchester United and Chief Executive of the European division of the Association of Tennis Professionals. Currently Andy is Chief Executive of Kitbag, an online sports retailer. He joined the BOA Board as a non-executive Director in May 2011.

David Ross

David is the current Chairman of Cosalt plc and also the Chair of the Nottingham University Development Committee, amongst other non-executive Director appointments. Previously, David was the co-founder and Deputy Chairman of the Carphone Warehouse from 1991 through to 2008. He is the current Chairman of the BOA Audit Committee, and joined the BOA Board as a non-executive Director in June 2011.

IOC Members

Sir Phil Craven

Phil is a five-time Paralympian from 1972 – 1988, who represented Great Britain in Wheelchair Basketball and Swimming. He is currently the President of the International Paralympic Committee, a position he has held since being elected in 2001.

Sir Craig Reedie

Craig became Chairman of the British Olympic Association in 1992, where he served for more than a decade before retiring in 2005. Previously, he was a successful Badminton player at national and international level from 1962 – 1970, before becoming involved in the administration of the sport as President of the International Badminton Federation. Craig is also a member of the IOC Executive Board.

Adam Pengilly – IOC Athletes’ Commission

Adam is a competing British Skeleton racer. He has been a member of Team GB at the Olympic Winter Games on three occasions – initially as a Bobsleigh coach in 2002, and then as a Skeleton competitor in 2006 and 2010. He won the bronze medal at the European Championships in 2008, and was silver medallist at the World Championships in 2009. Adam was elected to the IOC Athletes’ Commission at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Honorary Members

Albert Woods – Life Vice President

Albert is the President of the European Canoe Association and the President of the British Canoe Union, where he is Chairman of the World Class Management Group. Albert started canoeing aged 17 and went on to compete with the British Canoe Slalom and Wildwater teams.

Dame Di Ellis - Life Vice President

Di is the Chairman of the British Rowing Association. Before taking on the role in 1989, Di was a successful rower at international level. Di was elected to the BOA Board in December 1997.

Observers

John James

John is currently the Chairman of the British Olympic Foundation. Previously, he was the Secretary of the Lawn Tennis Association for many years until his retirement in 2003. John was also President of Tennis Europe, and acted as ITF Technical Delegate for Tennis for three Olympic Games.

Dick Palmer – Executive Vice President

Dick was appointed Deputy General Secretary of the British Olympic Association in 1975, and General Secretary in 1977 – a position he remained in until his retirement in 1997. He was Chef de Mission of the Great Britain Team at 10 Olympic Games (Summer & Winter) and for England’s Commonwealth Games Team at 3 Games.
