RYA Weed Management Guidance and Discount 

Inland lakes, gravel pits, reservoirs and rivers can sometimes be affected by large growths of aquatic weed which can cause problems for racing and recreational boating in the summer months.

Every summer many of our clubs get in touch seeking advice on how to best manage problems with inland aquatic weed. Some years the situation has been be so bad in particular locations that boating literally grinds to a halt.

Over the past three years the RYA has been monitoring some of the techniques clubs use to manage aquatic weed problems and this information has culminated in another update of the RYA weed management guidance document.

One method which has proved particularly effective over the past few years is the addition of dye to the affected water body. A product, known as ‘DyoFix©’, works by reducing the amount of sunlight entering the water thereby limiting the amount of weed that is able to grow. When applied at the right time of year and in the right quantities, many clubs have found this technique allows them to enjoy a mostly weed-free summer without the chore of constant cutting.

Reports from RYA clubs already using the product indicate that several applications may be required across the sailing season and it is important to get the dosage right. As a rough guide, approximately 1kg of powder will treat 1 million litres of lake water and 1kg of liquid concentrate will treat 5.75 million litres of water. For reference, a 1 hectare lake with an average depth of 2m holds around 10 million litres of water.
