When Jenna Randall and Olivia Federici qualified to represent Team GB in the Duet in Beijing, they became the first British synchronised swimmers to compete at the Olympics in sixteen years. Four years later, Jenna and Olivia are part of a team of nine swimmers that will represent Great Britain at London 2012.
UK Sport has invested just over £5 million into the sport since London won the bid to host the Games in 2005. In September 2007, British Synchronised Swimming moved to a new High Performance Centre at the British Army Barracks in Aldershot. The Centre is now home to the sport’s eighteen elite swimmers and their coaches.
Athletes at the Centre benefit from a full training programme, including physical and technical preparation, a competition programme that covers international events, nutritional, psychological and physiological monitoring and lifestyle support. In recognition of the success that Performance Director Biz Price has had in taking the sport forward, UK Sport has also provided her with additional coaching support to ensure that she is able to maximise her own potential, and that of the team, in the lead up to London 2012.
There are two Olympic disciplines in Synchronised Swimming: Duet and Team. The Team event comprises eight swimmers and in both disciplines judges mark a variety of components during the course of a routine, including choreography, difficulty and execution. Randall and Federici, who won silver at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, will compete once again in the Duet and the pair will then join up with Jenna’s sister, Asha, and six others in the Team event.
The delivery of two European Synchronised Swimming events, supported by UK Sport, in Gloucester and Sheffield has also supported the performance preparations of the British team which has resulted in Britain qualifying the Duet directly for the Olympics; and the Team making it into the world top 10.
Did You Know?
Synchronised Swimming is one of two exclusively female Olympic sports, the other being Rhythmic Gymnastics.
