Boat Fire Safety Week 2014

Be aware of the dual dangers of fire and carbon monoxide (CO) on board.

In the past 20 years over thirty boaters have been killed in boat fires and just over thirty have lost their lives to the ‘silent killer’ carbon monoxide. Tragically, there has already been one fatal boat fire and three people have died from CO poisoning this year.

Boat Fire Safety Week

Boat Fire Safety Week (BFSW) is a Department for Communities & Local Government (DCLG) ‘Fire Kills’ campaign/Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) initiative which occurs each Whitsun week.

Many fire and rescue services are participating including Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service that may have the single biggest population of pleasure craft for any fire authority in England and Wales.

There are many other fire authorities and individual fire stations participating.

Timing the week at the start of the peak boating season, the request to boat owners is to take a moment to follow the fire and carbon monoxide safety tips found in the links below and to pass the advice on.

Sharing safety tips

Boaters are being encouraged to pass on safety tips to help prevent fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.

See the Fire Kills Facebook pages and look out for #boatfiresafety2014 hashtag on Twitter.
