Sportscover is delighted it has been nominated as a finalist in the Generation i Youth Development and Employer of the Year category at the 2014 Australia and New Zealand Insurance Industry Awards. The other two finalists in this category are Aon, BT Financial Group.

A thrilled David Lamb, CEO of Sportscover Australia, was proud that the long standing culture of youth development and training had led to Sportscover being nominated. “We are delighted to be a finalist in this year’s awards and to be acknowledged for our commitment to our staff. Sportscover has always understood the value and worth of young people in its workforce. Over its twenty-seven year history Sportscover has had a policy of recruiting energetic young people with a positive attitude and followed through with a commitment to train and develop them with several of them rising through the ranks to hold very senior positions. Youth and sport are two common threads and another factor that I am extremely proud of is that 90% of our workforce has participated in sport by playing, coaching or administrating and there’s barely a sport that someone in the office hasn’t been involved in at some point in time. I mean, our receptionist has represented Australia in three sports alone, and she’s only 25! Choosing staff with the right attitude and commitment has re-paid us tenfold and has been a major factor in Sportscover becoming a world-leading sports and leisure insurer”.

David continued, “One of my objectives is for Sportscover to be recognised as an employer of choice. This is certainly helped by the staff being able to experience working life in our offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Shanghai and London.”

ANZIIF congratulated Sportscover for reaching the finalist stage in the Generation i Youth Development and Employer of the Year category for Australian Insurance Industry Awards. “This year we received a record number of submissions, all of which were extremely high quality. With so much competition, making it to final selection is a commendable achievement.”

Award winners are announced and presented at a gala presentation evening attended by over 800 industry leaders and members. The awards will be held on Wednesday 20 August 2014 at The Star Event Centre, Sydney.

Ahead of Sochi, Sportscover Europe business development director Paul Thomas looks at the insurance risks behind the 22nd Winter Olympic Games.

By Paul Thomas, Business Development Director at Sportscover Europe

7 February, 2014

With the arrival of the 22nd Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, this week sees the start of one of the world’s great sporting spectacles. With 98 events across 15 disciplines, it looks set to deliver a feast of entertainment and endeavor. Sport takes central importance across the world, but it has particular resonance here in the UK. It was the UK, after all, that codified a good proportion of the world sporting events that take place every day -including the curling event at this year's Winter Olympics

As we all know, curling is a sport in which players slide stones across a sheet of ice towards a target area which is segmented into four concentric rings. It is related to bowls, boule and shuffleboard, and will no doubt play an integral role in the nation's sporting imagination next week.

But as with the London Olympics of two years ago, which attracted the scrutiny of the world's media and a plethora of security analysts, areas such as Chechnya, Dagestan and Georgia - all nations close to Sochi's location on the north coast of the Black Sea - are likely to be a part of the narrative

Two recent bombings in Volgograd and reports of suicide bombers dubbed "black widows" in operation prompted the US government to say it viewed the Games as an "attractive target for terrorists."

It is hard for us sports lovers in the UK to get our heads around this kind of talk. Sport is ingrained in our collective psyche as being a topic of fierce pub debate, tribal loyalty, or even national handwringing -like when the ball clearly crosses the line but the linesman somehow misses it, as happened in the last FIFA World Cup when Frank Lampard had his shot ruled out against Germany - but security nonetheless looks set to play a major role in the Winter Olympics.

Yet Sochi is merely part of a greater festival of sport that we can look forward to this year. Lest we forget, another global sporting extravaganza, the FIFA World Cup, takes place this Summer in Brazil, the spiritual home of football.

Closer to home we can look forward the Tour de France visiting the UK once again and commencing for the first time in Yorkshire. Of course, these events are not without risk, and it is here that the Lloyd's insurance market comes into its own as a leading provider of specialist sports cover for participants.

Indeed, when it comes to the blue ribbon events of the year, the top athletes will certainly be well-advised and have appropriate bespoke protection. But worryingly, at the amateur level there is still a lack of education of the benefits of suitable insurance cover.

With diverse participant bases, it can be challenging for sporting bodies to satisfy the varied insurance requirements of their membership. Having access to additional products is therefore crucial to ensure peace of mind, whatever your sport or performance level.

Ultimately, whether you operate as an amateur light head third eleven prop in the Rugby union or an elite Olympic downhill skier, advice about personal welfare and insurance protection will always be needed -and the London insurance market is particularly well serviced to provide it.

With the Winter Olympics now under way in Sochi, the potential for serious sporting injury rises.

After seven years of waiting, the Russian resort of Sochi between the Black Sea and the Caucasus mountains will for two weeks be the centre of global media attention with the start of the 22nd Winter Olympic Games.

Already Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, has been on the slopes in the mountains in full ski regalia in a move intended to silence the sceptics who claimed as with Vancouver four years ago a potential lack of snow could have hampered some events. Well, the snow has arrived, the weather forecast looks encouraging and, besides, such has been the extent of planning and preparation for this sporting spectacle even if conditions do deteriorate there will be no need to worry. The organisers have 500 snow guns ready to make artificial snow, with 710,000 m3 of snow also in special storage, having been taken from the Caucasus mountains last winter.

Out of organisers’ hands

Despite the meticulous preparation for these Winter Olympics, however, one factor will always be out of the hands of the organisers: sporting injury. The simple fact remains these games will have a slew of events which are by their nature inherently dangerous. As recently as 2012 Canadian World Cup skiing cross-country specialist Nic Zoricic and World Championship-winning freestyle skier Sarah Burke both lost their lives on the slopes.

At a World Cup race on March 10 in Grindelward in Switzerland, Zoricic crashed head-first into netting lining the course after going wide and falling on the final jump. He suffered severe skull and brain trauma and was airlifted to a hospital in Interlaken where he was later pronounced dead. Earlier that year, Burke was seriously injured while training on the Park City Mountain Resort Eagle superpipe in Utah and later died in hospital. Four years previously, Austria’s Mathias Lanzinger lost control in a men’s World Cup downhill event at Kvitfjell, Norway and had to have his left leg amputated below the knee.

Wide range of activities

Of course, the Winter Olympics encompass a much wider range of activities than skiing. Indeed, one of the attractions of the event for the casual viewer is the opportunity to engage with some of the more esoteric winter events which have increasingly come to the fore in recent years such as the luge, snowboarding and skeleton. Unfortunately, however, these events can pose just as much danger to competitors, as sadly demonstrated at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics when Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili lost control at 88 mph during a late-morning training run and flew off the final corner at the Whistler Sliding Centre. The 21-year-old Olympian struck one of the structural poles lining that part of the course and attempts to revive him at the track were unsuccessful.

It is important to remember nonetheless these sports are not limited to the Olympic Games. Skeleton, a spin-off from the popular British sport of Cresta sledding, where a person rides a small sled down a frozen track while lying face down, became permanently added to the Winter Olympic programme in 2002. Popularity in the sport has grown since then and now includes participation by some countries that do not or cannot have a track because of climate, terrain or monetary limitations. Athletes from such countries as Australia, New Zealand, Bermuda, South Africa, Argentina, Iraq, Israel, Mexico, Brazil and even the Virgin Islands have become involved with the sport in recent years.

Another more esoteric winter sport, the luge (which translates as “sled”) sees competitors travelling feet-first down an icy track at up to 85 mph with only a helmet for protection. This is catching on in countries you would not necessarily expect; for example, you can learn to luge in Britain, with Chill Factore in Manchester offering a dedicated luge facility. It is only 60 m long and far removed from the Olympic event, but still offers a taste.

No shortage of cover

Whether at the highest level of competition or at a more amateur level, participants in such dangerous sports should be comforted by the knowledge underwriters do not shy away from cover. The insurance market, especially at Lloyd’s, has a distinguished history of offering accident insurance to cover death or disablement for professional athletes participating in such events, with similar cover also available for those wishing to participate at an amateur level, typically offering compensation and/or rehabilitation for disabling injury, medical expenses and loss of income. Indeed, Sportscover has recently signed a four-year partnership with the UK’s high-performance sports agency, UK Sport, which is responsible for unlocking Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic potential.

It is reassuring to know even though for many of us the nearest we will get to a head-first slide down an ice track at 80 mph is merely as a spectator from the comfort of our lounge, for those who do want to get serious this winter – whether in Sochi or Manchester – bespoke cover is there to support them.

After a distinguished underwriting career spanning over forty years, the last twenty three as a Lloyd’s leader in Bloodstock, Sportscover’s class underwriter Robin Blunt has announced his retirement.

Robin is well known in the market and a highly respected underwriter in his class. He has built a small but profitable book of Bloodstock business at Sportscover Syndicate 3334 since his appointment in 2011.

Robin said, “I have had a wonderful career in the Bloodstock market at Lloyd’s doing something that I have really enjoyed. For any underwriter, being a lead underwriter at Lloyd’s is the pinnacle of achievement and I will leave the market with many fond memories of my time here.”

He continued, “I have always stuck to the principle that I will only write business if I can make a profit. The market has become so competitive that it is increasingly difficult to maintain that principle going forward. Therefore, I felt that it was the right time to start the next phase of my life as I have a number of other interests that I want to pursue.“

Murray Anderson, Active Underwriter for syndicate 3334 commented, “Robin was the reason that we went into the Bloodstock class in 2011. He brought his extensive experience in the class when he joined us and has made a profit on the book every year. We will miss him and we wish him all the very best in his retirement”.

As a result of Blunt’s retirement, Sportscover has decided to run-off its Bloodstock account.

“We knew that we had an underwriter in Robin who would only write business if he could make a profit,” Anderson added. “As Robin has confirmed, it is a highly competitive class and we do not feel that this is likely to change anytime soon. Consequently, we have decided that we will no longer continue to write Bloodstock business going forward”.

Blunt will spend his last day on a Lloyd’s box on September 13th.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has partnered with Sportscover in a bid to boost quality and safety across the UK’s sport and leisure industry.

RoSPA, the UK’s leading accident prevention charity, and Sportscover, established in 1986 as a worldwide specialist sports and leisure insurer which has an insurance syndicate at Lloyd’s of London, will collaborate on safety campaigns, policy and industry initiatives.

A key focus will be on identifying emerging risks leading to injuries and accidents in the sector to create a better understanding of what is at the root of these problems and how to tackle them.

RoSPA also hopes the partnership will encourage the sport and leisure industry to embrace its ethos of being “as safe as necessary, not as safe as possible”.

Sportscover and Active (Sportscover’s leisure brand) policy holders will benefit from priority access to RoSPA’s risk management information and services, including a helpline offering free water and leisure health and safety advice and support following accidents and deaths, as well as preferential rates on RoSPA consultancy, membership and playground inspections.

David Walker, RoSPA’s leisure safety manager, said: “Sportscover is a trusted name with an expert insight into sport and leisure management in the UK and abroad, which shares RoSPA’s commitment to improving safety.”

“We are confident that this partnership will help spread the benefits of good risk management and high quality expertise across the sector, with the help of Sportscover’s huge reach of clients whether it be individual participants, coaches, instructors, facility operators, event organisers or indeed national governing bodies.”

Paul Thomas, business development director at Sportscover, said: “We are delighted to be working with RoSPA. Its name is synonymous with health and safety in the sectors we accommodate through our Sportscover and Active product range.

“We have enjoyed considerable dialogue with RoSPA during the past 18 months and it has become clear that the partnership will be of considerable benefit to both parties and, more importantly, our existing and prospective policyholders. We continue to look forward to assisting RoSPA in their mission to improve safety.”

RoSPA, which has nearly 100 years of expertise, is dedicated to saving lives and reducing injuries by preventing accidents at leisure, at work, on the road, in the home and through safety education.

Chris Nash interviewed for Insurance News Australia about Boston Marathon Bombing
29th May, 2013

Chris Nash interviewed for Insurance News Australia about Boston Marathon Bombing

Sportscover's Managing Director Chris Nash has been interviewed for Insurance News Australia about the Boston Marathon Bombing. Mr Nash described how the bombing will influence risk management of these types of events, and the effect it will have on cancellation rates.

The article has been transcribed below:

CANCELLATION RATES COULD RISE

THE BOSTON Marathon bombing could cause cancellation premium rates to rise for major events around the world.

The world also could see much stricter controls on risk management of big events especially those that draw big crowds.

“This terror act is really going to change the game,” Chris Nash, managing director of Sportscover Australia and active underwriter for Lloyd’s Syndicate 3334. “It is a real tragedy.”

Society would even have to think about major events like Sydney’s City to Surf where some 70,000 people participate.

From a risk management perspective and from liability and cancellations there were issues that were going to rise up.

Nevertheless, he was pleased to see and to say that the London Marathon went “without a hitch” at the weekend. This event was as much a festival as a run and had to be preserved.

However, such an event now took a much stronger demand on risk management.

Mr Nash said event organisers were going to be asked to do the impossible to prevent any similar circumstance.

The only way they could mitigate any financial fall-out was in insurance. It was “guaranteed to be an increase in premium.”

Although he sympathised with all the wounded in Boston, there would be no or little personal accident-injury insurance cover because they would be without act of terrorism cover.

However, the main change in the insurance game would be cancellation cover and this might be being sought after two big sports events were cancelled after the marathon bombings – understood to be the Boston Bruins ice hockey team and the Boston Celtics basketball team matches.

Mr Nash also cited the matter when AXA withdrew its cover for the Japan-Korea FIFA World Cup 2002, following the WTC terrorist bombings a year before having accepted the risk several years before.

Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway picked up the insurance and no terrorist act was committed.

RISK MANAGEMENT TO BE A BIG ISSUE

RISK MANAGEMENT procedures for major open space events will have to change around the world following the Boston Marathon bombings last week.

Boston was a second tier city, that is not like the majors New York, London, Berlin, for instance, and thus it was unexpected that any such terrorist act would explode there.

But that was not to say it could not happen again in such a city, even Melbourne, said Chris Nash, managing director of Sportscover Australia and active underwriter for Lloyd’s Syndicate 3334.

“We also will go through a change in the terrorism insurance market,” he told INAcom.

There would be opportunities for people to write terrorism and over time the market also would across expand liability and contingency businesses.

The disappointing thing about such acts as Boston was that people who were injured were going to miss out on cover. Also people who want to enjoy such events could miss out also, especially as many of them want to run for charity.

For Sportscover, because of the knock-on effect of cancellations a lot of its cover was written through binders, especially in the US.

“So we do not know to what extent the claims will be,” he said.

Mr Nash added that the Boston Marathon was not actually cancelled because most of the runners had finished. The bombs were set off 4 hours after the race started. “My feeling is that there will be no claims (cancellation) on Boston Marathon itself but on subsequent events.”

“We will definitely see cancellation rises for this type of event and underwriters will be very, very nervous,” he added.

David Boyle appointed Contingency underwriter at Sportscover’s syndicate

Sportscover is pleased to announce the appointment of David Boyle as class underwriter for Contingency at Lloyd’s syndicate 3334. David, who most recently was contingency underwriter at Munich Re commenced underwriting with Syndicate 3334 yesterday. He reports directly to the syndicate’s Joint Active underwriter, Murray Anderson.

David has many years experience in contingency and before Munich Re underwrote a contingency account at Sirius and Worldwide Special Risks.

Commenting on the appointment, David said, “I am excited at the prospect of working with the Sportscover team. I have been aware of Sportscover’s significant growth in contingency over the past few years and I believe that this will be a tremendous opportunity for me to continue to build the book.”

David will be replacing Sportscover’s current contingency underwriter, Ben Wiggins, who is moving to Canada at the end of April.

Murray Anderson said, “I am delighted that David has joined us. He has a well deserved reputation for being an experienced and high quality contingency underwriter. Our contingency account has grown strongly in the past few years and I am sure that he will continue to grow that area of our business.”

He added, “Obviously I wish to thank Ben sincerely for his work within the Sportscover Group for the past six and a half years and in particular the past twelve months ensuring the Contingency division continued growing. All of us at Sportscover wish him the very best of luck for his new life in Canada.”

Peter Robertson

Three time ITU World Champion Peter Robertson joined Team Sportscover in the Nissan Corporate Triathlon held in Elwood, Victoria, Australia. 'Robbo' was joined by Sportscover Australia CEO David Lamb, Director Tim Nash and Underwriter Jarrod Morey.

Robertson, Australia's greatest male triathlete over the Olympic distance, is currently making a comeback to professional sport. However, he is 'upsizing' to the half ironman distance - a gruelling 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21km race. He joined Sportscover's team to use the event as training and preparation. Robbo led his team to come home second.

Robertson was the last man to win a world triathlon title for Australia in 2005. Now he wants to be the first to achieve the feat again - eight years on and 37-years-old. "My passion for the sport is back. I didn't retire because I wasn't fit or had an injury, I retired because I was burnt out. Didn't love it anymore." However, the Olympian, with one of the best runs in the game, said his love for triathlon was reignited while working briefly with junior talent. "It has excited me and made me realise I wasn't finished".

"That's the real goal, to win Hawaii," said Robertson, buoyed by the knowledge that age has proved no barrier to success in the ultra-distance races with Alexander, 38, and McCormack, 37, when they won the Hawaii Ironman in 2011 and 2010 respectively. "I'm thinking of this as a second chance for me".

Leading water safety charity launches national safety guidance for water sports

Launching the guidance: David Walker, Leisure Safety Manager RoSPA, Esther Pearson, CEO SLSGB and Paul Thomas, Underwriting Manager, Sportscover.

With a surge in popularity of open water swimming and water sports, two leading British safety organisations have teamed up in a bid to save lives.

Surf Life Saving GB (SLSGB) and The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) have today (Monday 17 December) issued Event Water Safety Guidance for local authorities, charities, sports organisations, event operators and leisure companies.

The guide is a result of extensive research into water injuries and deaths over a variety of water sports. It is the first time comprehensive advice has been brought together in one place for organisations handling activities from surfing to boating and open water swimming.

Latest figures from the Water Incident Database (WAID) show there were 420 water-related deaths from accidents or natural causes across the UK in 2010.

The majority of deaths, 52 per cent (217 fatalities), took place in inland waters including rivers, lochs and reservoirs. A further 22 per cent (94) were at the coast or in a harbour, dock, marina or port, and 17 per cent (73) occurred out at sea.

The Guidance, sponsored by Lloyd’s insurer Sportscover and with support from Derby University, includes emergency planning, how to choose the right equipment, risk assessment and other health and safety advice.

Surf Life Saving GB is a charity of more than 6,000 volunteers who since 1954 have devoted their time to providing water safety education and patrols on beaches and areas of open water nationwide.

David Walker, leisure safety manager for RoSPA, said: “The rationale for this guidance is to bring together good policies on water safety to help site managers and ultimately save lives, especially with more people taking part in open swimming events and similar sports.

“This new guidance is the first time that this information has been collected in one place and should give those involved with watersports a point of help in every situation.” Esther Pearson, Chief Executive of Surf Life Saving GB said:

“Surf Life Saving GB clubs are the heart of their communities and there are many calls on our lifeguards to support the increasing number of water-based events, as well as our own growing life saving sport programme. There have been a number of occasions that we and our members have been concerned about varying standards of event water safety management.

“This document aims to assist in the improvement of standards by creating an overarching strategic framework that sits across a variety of sporting disciplines. By setting a standard for safety for all water-based events, we hope to reduce risk across the country, allowing more people to enjoy water-based activities on our coasts and waterways.

”Without the commitment to safety by a number of leading organisations we would not have been able to create this guide. In particular, the research, authoring and publication of this document would not have been possible without the support of RoSPA and Sportscover, to whom we offer our grateful thanks.”

SLSGB celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2013 and last month signed a new strategic partnership with Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) at a special reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh, KG, KT.

Madeleine Hogan wins bronze

Sportscover would like to congratulate Madeleine Hogan who won bronze at the London Paralympics in the women’s F46 javelin with a personal best effort.

The world champion coming into the competition, Maddy hit 34.98m in round one, before 37.52m, 38.38m, 38.69m, 36.01m and was positioned fourth after five rounds. The 23-year old's final attempt was a personal best of 38.85m capture bronze on her last attempt from Hongmei Zhao (CHN, fourth, 38.41m). Madeleine was joined on the dais by Katarzyna Piekart (POL, first, 41.15m, WR) and Nataliya Gudkova (RUS, second, 41.08m, PB)

Hogan said: “There have been a few variables that have stopped me from being as perfect as I could be coming into the Games but a six-throw series of season best throws is great and I’m sure the coach will be happy about that.

She then joked: “To be honest when I was in 4th place with a throw to go I thought to myself that John (Eden, Hogan’s coach) would be angry if I don’t do well so I had to pull one out of the bag. He has that effect on me.” Sportscover Australia's CEO David Lamb says “Everyone at Sportscover are very proud of Maddy, to pull a personal best on your last throw to win bronze is a tremendous effort….. Sportscover is extremely honoured to be involved with a wonderful athlete like Maddy.”

Lloyd’s Sporting History

Reproduced from Lloyds.com

As the world watches London’s spectacular summer of sport, Lloyd’s looks back at its own history of supporting sporting dreams.

The Lloyd’s market has certainly played its part. In the run up to the Beijing Games four years ago, Lloyd’s insurer Sportscover was thrilled when one of the athletes it sponsored, hockey player Sarah Thomas, was picked for the GB Squad. Sarah is now a double Olympian having been picked again for the 2012 squad.

Lloyd’s insurer Beazley has recently found out that virtue can be its own reward. It was shortlisted for the prestigious Hollis Sponsorship Awards in the Sports Sponsorship (under £750k) category for its support of British Fencing. The countdown clock on Beazley’s website has been steadily ticking away the days before the Olympic Fencing begins.

Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund is also particularly pleased that one of the charities it sponsors will have such a strong showing at the London Games. The British Limbless Ex-Servicemen’s Association (BLESMA) supports former military personnel through physical rehabilitation, residential care, financial grants and welfare advice.

Seven of their ex-servicemen are taking part in events including rowing, volleyball, sailing and cycling at the Paralympics. We wish them the best of luck.

Lloyd’s own staff too, have been keen to help their hometown Games. Eric Linin who works in Lloyd’s Human Resources Department, will be undertaking 11-hour long shifts as a volunteer marshal. But the hours don’t faze him one bit,

“To be involved in the greatest show on earth, in my home town is amazing. I’ll be able to say that I was there.”

Lloyd’s has long provided cover for sporting events across the globe. However, these events would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the men and women striving for sporting glory.

Madeleine Hogan Sponsored by Sportscover

Sportscover now proudly sponsors Madeleine Hogan. Maddy is a world-leading F46 javelin thrower who won bronze for Australia at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing and is preparing to take the next step in London 2012.

Maddy was born without half of her left arm, but has never seen this as a disadvantage. She has excelled at sport, including as a cricketer - representing her state of Victoria, and is also a skilled golfer.

However Maddy beats all comers when it comes to Javelin. In addition to winning bronze at the 2008 Olympics, Maddy won Gold at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch. By beating the rest of the field by 4m, while carrying an injury into the competition, has proved Maddy to be a true champion.

Maddy balances her sporting commitments with university, studying Exercise and Sport Science at Deakin University. At the London 2012 Games, Maddy will be looking to improve on her 2008 performance by bringing home Gold for Australia. We wish her all the best.

Simon started with Sportscover in 1991 and not only quickly became an integral part of the business but a great friend to all who worked with him.

He had a “can do” attitude and was always willing to help. His positive attitude was infectious and there was rarely a chat with Simon that did not result in a few laughs.

As a founding director, Simon was a major part of the expansion of Sportscover including working in the various Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and London offices.

A very keen sportsman Simon was a Triathlete, Martial Artist, Surf Life Saver, Golfer and Melbourne FC supporter who was always willing to have a go at any number of other sports.

He married his wife Deonne and started a family. His two children Marcus and Sienna were the light of his life.

His courage and strength over the past 2 years during his battle with cancer has been an inspiration to us all.

On-line quoting launched for bespoke golf cover

Download this Media Release - PDF

Access to the widest insurance cover at the most competitive premiums is now even easier for golf clubs with the launch of a new on-line quoting system.

Golf clubs can ask their insurance broker to obtain a quote through the Australian Golf Insurance website – www.australiangolfinsurance.com with an immediate response in most cases.

Australian Golf Insurance is the specialist golf programme that was launched last year by Golf Australia and Lloyd’s insurer Sportscover and offers bespoke cover for golf club property, liability, professional indemnity, management liability and voluntary workers risks. At the time of launching the programme Golf Australia CEO, Stephen Pitt, said that it would help give clubs some peace of mind.

"The Australian Golf Insurance programme provides Golf Australia and the States the ability to minimise risk for all Australian golf clubs and golfers, something we as an industry have been striving towards for some time," Pitt said.

"This is a unique offering which provides all golf clubs in Australia the ability to obtain broad suitable cover as well as the ability to choose which broker they wish to deal with. No longer do clubs need to go to a single insurance broker to receive benefits that our buying power can generate."

However, until now quotes under the programme were obtained by the club's insurance broker contacting Sportscover's underwriters. Now they can receive a quote electronically after registering on the site.

Sportscover CEO, Chris Nash, said "The programme has been hugely successful since its launch last year. However, we wanted to make it even easier for clubs to obtain this specialist programme and so we have introduced the on-line quoting system".

The on-line quoting system is available now and clubs and their brokers can obtain more details at www.australiangolfinsurance.com or by emailing golfaust@sportscover.com

Damian replaces Simon Trowell who has decided to establish his own business after 11 years of valuable service with Sportscover. In his time with Sportscover, Simon has been an integral part of the development of Sportscover's operations in Sydney, NSW, Queensland and overseas and a highly valued member of the management team. There will be a handover period of one month.

Chris Nash, Sportscover's CEO in Australia said, "I have conflicting emotions in making this announcement. On the one hand I am very sorry to see Simon depart after having worked closely with him on various projects over the past 11 years. His contribution to Sportscover's growth has been considerable."

Appointments keep Lloyd's insurer Sportscover
on track with expansion strategy

Lloyd's insurer Sportscover is continuing to pursue its ambitious expansion and diversification strategy by announcing the appointment of highly respected Bloodstock underwriter, Robin Blunt.

Robin has been in the insurance industry for more than 40 years, initially as a broker but the latter half of this as an underwriter in the Lloyd's market, most recently with Lloyd's insurer Brit. He has been specialising in bloodstock since 1979. Robin becomes Bloodstock underwriter for Sportscover's syndicate 3334 with immediate effect.

Robin commented, "I am looking forward to working with Sportscover's talented and growing team of specialist underwriters. Sportscover have ambitious plans for the future. I am pleased to be part of a team who are determined to be the best in sports and leisure insurance."

Robin is also joined at Sportscover by Ally Halstead. Ally has worked in the London insurance market since 2006, spending two years handling Bloodstock claims for Lexington Insurance Company, part of the AIG Group. In 2008 she joined Marketform syndicate to handle Bloodstock claims, later expanding her role to include PA, Marine and Specie claims. She has a keen interest in horse racing, but her main focus is the Sport Horse industry, in particular show jumping and eventing.

Matthew Riley, CEO of Sportscover Underwriting Limited, said "I am delighted that we have been able to bring to Sportscover two highly talented insurance professionals in Robin and Ally. We are implementing our agreed development strategy and the recent appointments show that we are making real progress towards our goal of sustainable growth through diversification by employing top quality specialists."

The appointment of Robin and Ally follows on from the employment of Contingency underwriter Simon Lyons in July last year. Simon has over 20 years insurance experience including specific contingency experience in Cancellation, Non-Appearance, Prize Indemnity, Contract Bonus, Weather Day and Commercial Producers Indemnity. His employment has led to a significant increase in open market contingency business written by 3334.

Sportscover has also announced that Murray Anderson has become joint Active underwriter for Syndicate 3334 with Chris Nash.

Chris Nash explained, "Sportscover is seeing a significant increase in business from around the world. Appointing Murray as joint Active Underwriter will enable us to pursue the many business opportunities that we are seeing by focusing on particular geographic regions. This is a sensible approach to ensure that we can make the most of the opportunities being presented to us and provide a high quality service to brokers and clients."

Murray's appointment also sees him elevated to the board of Sportscover Underwriting Ltd.

Sportscover is one of the world's leading sports and leisure insurance services groups with offices in London, Melbourne, Sydney, Shanghai, and the Pacific Islands. Using a worldwide broker network, Sportscover specialises in accident, liability, property, contingency and travel insurances for sport and leisure. As a Lloyd's syndicate, SCS 3334 benefits from Lloyd's market rating and is the only A rated dedicated sports and leisure insurer in the world. Specialist sports and leisure Lloyd's syndicate Sportscover 3334 has signed a sponsorship agreement with Lloyd's Football Club which will provide further exposure for the Sportscover brand within the Lloyd's market.

Described as a 'natural fit' by Sportscover Underwriting Limited CEO, Matthew Riley, the arrangement means that the Sportscover 3334 name will feature on Lloyd's FC shirt fronts for all representative games played in the UK and overseas. As part of the deal the annual Lloyd's Market football competition, which was won by broker Aon last season, will be known as the 'Lloyd's Community Shield Sponsored by Sportscover' and Sportscover will present the annual Player of the Year award.

Graham Bell, Chairman of Lloyd's FC, said, "We are delighted to have concluded this agreement with the only dedicated sports and leisure syndicate in the Lloyd's market. Both parties see this as the start of a long term relationship which will have significant mutual benefits".

Matthew Riley commented, "Sportscover has a long history of supporting community sport through sponsorship, training, education and advice and so it is a great pleasure to partner with one of the principal social clubs for the Lloyd's community, Lloyd's Football Club. It really is a natural fit for us given we are a Lloyd's specialist sports and leisure underwriter and insure a large number of football clubs and associations in the UK, Europe, Australia and beyond."

Golf clubs and golfers now have access to some of the widest cover available at the most competitive premiums through a new insurance product partnership between Golf Australia and insurer Sportscover.

The Australian Golf Insurance program provided by Sportscover's Lloyd's syndicate, will offer bespoke cover for golf club property, liability, professional indemnity, management liability and voluntary workers risks. Golf clubs can access these products through any licensed general insurance broker in Australia.

Golf Australia CEO, Stephen Pitt, said the program would help give clubs some peace of mind.

"The Australian Golf Insurance program provides Golf Australia and the States the ability to minimize risk for all Australian golf clubs and golfers, something we as an industry have been striving towards for some time," Pitt said.

"This is a unique offering which provides all golf clubs in Australia the ability to obtain broad suitable cover as well as the ability to choose which broker they wish to deal with. No longer do clubs need to go to a single insurance broker to receive benefits that our buying power can generate."

Sportscover CEO, Chris Nash, said "We are delighted to be working with Golf Australia to provide specialist insurance products that will be of benefit to the golfing community. As a keen golfer myself, and as someone working in the insurance industry, I know the importance of getting cover with an insurer who understands the risk and can offer A rated security. Golf clubs can be certain that they will have both with this new partnership."

The anticipated support of golf clubs for this initiative will allow the golf industry to play a role in influencing sustainable competitive risk and insurance costs for all stakeholders. The new product is available now and clubs and their brokers can obtain more details at www.australiangolfinsurance.com or by emailing moc.revocstrops@tsuaflog.

Sportscover is delighted to once again be nominated as a finalist in the Underwriting Agency of the Year category at the 2010 Australia and New Zealand Insurance Industry Awards. The other two finalists in this category are Brooklyn Underwriting and Global Transport & Automotive Insurance.

Chris Nash, CEO of Sportscover Australia, acknowledged the continued hard work of all those involved that has lead to Sportscover being nominated again. "We are delighted to be a finalist in this year's awards. Once again this is a tribute to our staff, broker network and clients who are all acknowledged in helping us with this great achievement."

Joan Fitzpatrick, ANZIIF CEO and Chair of the Judging Panel says the success of the Awards is due to the active involvement of the whole industry. "The standard of the nominations this year has been very high and it is pleasing to see how much the industry has embraced the importance of this type of recognition, with a record number of entries received," Fitzpatrick said.

"The judging task was intensive and the wealth of experience, knowledge and considered thought that our panel of judges brought to the process was exemplary. Having assessed each written submission across each criterion for the category and scored them, the judges then met for a day to discuss and evaluate again the top scoring candidates before lodging a silent vote with the auditors," she said.

Award winners are announced and presented at a gala presentation evening attended by over 800 industry leaders and members. The awards will be held on Thursday 12 August 2010 at the Parkside Ballroom, Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Sportscover expects "significant boost" in
Chinese business from Lloyd's China direct licence

Lloyd's being granted a direct insurance licence in China will give "a significant boost" to Sportscover's business from China, according to Sportscover's Managing Director, Peter Nash.

Mr Nash, who was part of the Lloyd's delegation in China when the announcement of the granting of the direct licence was made on Wednesday, said:

"We have been writing reinsurance business in China through Lloyd's China for several years and were big supporters of Lloyd's application for a direct licence. Whilst we will continue to maintain our strong relationships with the Chinese insurers that we currently work with, this gives us an opportunity to make real inroads into the Chinese sports and leisure market as a direct insurer."

Australian owned Sportscover has a Lloyd's managing agent and syndicate and was one of five managing agents represented in the Lloyd's delegation lead by Lloyd's Chairman Lord Levene.

Lloyds web site (www.lloyds.com) quotes Lord Levene as saying:

This is a very significant development for both Lloyd's and the Chinese insurance market. We are most grateful to the CIRC (China Insurance Regulatory Commission) for their help and to the Shanghai Municipal Government. This will be a further important building block in the development of Shanghai as a major international financial and maritime centre."

Mr Nash commented, "This is an historic day for both Lloyd's and Sportscover and will provide a significant boost to our Chinese business. It again emphasises the strength of the Lloyd's brand and is one of the major reasons why we chose to operate through the Lloyd's platform."
