This app has some serious flaws
What this app promises is great but there are some serious problems. For example, this app doesn't work with my contacts, so any text comes through only with the person's phone number. Awesome, like I recognize people's phone numbers.
A second problem is that you cannot create a text. Seriously, you have to get someone to text you first so you can respond. Another totally handy feature.
Because the app doesn't work with your contacts, the app doesn't help you find friends either. Even if you have used someone's gmail address in the past, the app is like "oh would you like to chat with these 4,000 possibly creepy people who have the same name as your friend?" Um no Google. I want to talk to my friend who I have emailed approx one million times. You are reading my emails aren't you, Google?
I would like a search feature for my SMS like there is on Google voice.
Finally, this app is slow on the uptake. When a phone call comes in I nearly always miss it since it takes so long to route through to the app.
There are probably more issues with this app, but I will let you guys find them. Prepare to rip your hair out with frustration at the idiocy.
Stop asking for my phone number
This is a great option on the iPhone and iPad, and I use it to keep in touch with people in my office while I am in and out of the office. It is smooth most of the time, but usually when I use it I am using speech dictation, and sometimes it will not allow me to use it randomly. (Not just whether or not I'm on wifi or cellular data) A new feature with the most recent update keeps asking me for my phone number to wink which I've done multiple times even though it says it is a one time set up, which is starting to get annoying every time I open the app. I love it for the most part, and makes communication for work on all my devices much easier.
Great messaging app
I have been extremely pleased with Google Hangouts. Almost all of my friends have a Google account, so Hangouts makes it convenient to keep in touch with people instantly.
I really like that Hangouts sends a notification message to the device you are currently using. For example, I might have Hangouts open on my computer and iPad, but if I am active on my iPhone, my phone will ping to let me know that I have a new message. Of course the message will appear on all devices, but it is great that only the active device alerts you to the incoming message.
Moreover, I really like that I can man make calls via Hangouts.
