What is National Paralympic Day?

The London 2012 Paralympic Games have been described as the greatest Paralympic Games ever. London 2012 was a watershed moment when Paralympic sport in the UK came of age. Record numbers of athletes and countries took part and huge crowds were inspired by the thrilling competitions and outstanding record breaking performances achieved by members of ParalympicsGB and athletes from other countries.

National Paralympic Day, celebrated for the first time on 7th September 2013, is set to become an annual event. It will be a focus for promoting Paralympic sport across the UK, celebrating the outstanding achievements of our Paralympic athletes and using their inspiration to raise awareness of disability more generally.

National Paralympic Day competition

The competition has now closed but please keep an eye out for next year’s National Paralympic Day competition.

You can still use our Primary and Secondary resources to help your students survey their schools or communities and to review how accessible they are for athletes, spectators and volunteers. On the basis of the evidence gathered they can prepare presentations on ways to improve their schools or communities to make it easier, safer and more accessible for people with disabilities.

This project could be used or adapted to link into a range of curriculum areas such as active citizenship or accredited course assignments.
