Terms of use for information and data

Natural England creates (or derives) and then publishes a range of information and data. We encourage Natural England’s customers, partners and suppliers to use this information and data and we aim to make as much information and data as possible available under the Open Government Licence, which allows free commercial and non-commercial reuse.

For a quick link to Natural England owned and published data with their associated licences (and to other datasets we can supply to contractors and partners) please see our Geographic Data for Contractors and Partners page - list of Data supplied by Natural England: (138kb)excel spreadsheet. For each geographic dataset this also provides hyperlinks to our latest download page, flags any datasets which are Environmental Open Data (including INSPIRE data), and provides links to Web Map Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service (WFS) pages.

Please note: We are currently migrating data from our externally available data download site to our DataShare download service, so this list may change frequently. Please do not download the spreadsheet.

For more information about our Geographic Information Systems (GIS) datasets see our Data page.

Most of Natural England's owned and publically available GIS Datasets are made available under a Natural England and Ordnance Survey Open Government Licence: (152kb)pdf document.

Please note that the Open Government Licence can only be used to licence datasets that we fully own or with the agreement of any third parties with Intellectual Property Rights in the data. Personal or restricted data will also not be provided under the Open Government Licence. We no longer make an administrative charge for commercial reuse of our information and data.

Local Nature Reserves are currently available under our Natural England and Ordnance Survey Open Government Licence (LNR indicative data): (154kb)pdf document.

If constraints, such as third party intellectual property rights, do not allow us to use the Open Government Licence the we make data available in accordance with our own Terms of Use for Information and Data: (183kb)pdf document

Non-GIS datasets that we can provide under the Open Government Licence is made available under a Natural England Open Government Licence: (157kb)pdf document.

Natural England publications are available for commercial and non-commercial purposes as long as the information described above is followed and in accordance with any publication's individual copyright statement.
