International Leadership Programme

Working primarily with Olympic and Paralympic National Governing Bodies (NGBs), UK Sport seeks to ensure that the UK contributes to the development and governance of international sport through the building of relationships with International Federations and other key international sporting organisations. It is these international governing bodies that decide:
- Where and when events are held
- The disciplines and sports held as part of sport events
- Rules, regulations and scoring systems
- Qualification, selection and ranking systems
- Permitted equipment and classification (for disability events)
The International Leadership Programme (ILP), launched in 2006, is designed to equip British sport administrators with the skills, competencies and behaviours they need to become effective representatives at international level. This also ensures that the UK’s sporting interests, and that of its representatives, are positioned at the forefront of international elite sport.
Each year, UK Sport looks to NGBs to nominate suitable candidates for the programme as part of a strategically planned approach to help British NGBs achieve their international relations objectives. A limited number of places are typically made available each year to individuals from non-Olympic/Paralympic NGBs and national partners who’s role or position demonstrably contributes positively to the UK’s wider relationships in international sport.
The 6th edition of the programme commences in September 2013 and runs through to April 2014 and consists of the following elements:
- 5 two-day residential modules each focusing on different themes in international sport
- Workshop content delivered by both expert trainers specialising in their respective field
- and insights shared from leaders from sport and non-sport sectors
- Attention to individual development needs through a bespoke 360˚ appraisal process
- and follow up with one-to-one sessions with an executive coach
- Access to world class trainers, speakers and a network of international contacts
Nominations for the 2013/2014 programme have now closed and nomination requests for 2014/2015 programme will be released in Spring/Summer 2014.
