Community Coach Education Reference Points
Case Study: Oceania
The Oceania Framework Review group
Collaborating with ICES provided the impetus for the Oceania National Olympic Committee to review and further develop a region specific sport education framework for the Oceania Sport Education Programme (OSEP). The OSEP framework provides overarching reference points and a quality assurance mechanism for the OSEP programme and other linked sport education in the region.
The OSEP framework references three key areas: infrastructure and policy; training; deployment/development/retention. Within each area guiding principles have been established for the region’s training providers and organisations that recruit and deploy community coaches. Through pilot projects led by members of the OSEP Framework Review Group practical resources have been developed for sport education stakeholders in support of establishing, developing and benchmarking quality sport education systems.

This entails collaboration with the National Sport Director’s office in resource development and building capacity of a cohort of trainers and tutors who are the workforce for Special Olympics coach education and development programme.
The ICES team does not solely conduct training programmes, it also works alongside identified Special Olympic expertise to share practice and support areas identified as ‘in development’ through the mapping process. In 2010, 80 national level trainers and tutors were supported through this initiative. Testimonial: Air Marshall Denzil Keelor, Chairman of Special Olympic Bharat.
“You have played a crucial role in raising the standard of our Training programs to the dizzy heights we are today. In our quest for excellence, there is no program in the world of Special Olympics that is doing anything like we are, and frankly, if it was not for the intervention of UK Sport, this would never have happened. We continue to be profoundly grateful for this and continue to call our program ‘International Inspiration’ for sentimental reasons - that’s how we feel about it!”
