Case Study: Lydia Sakala
Sport has changed my personality, character and behaviour. It is an activity, which helps people from different parts of the world to speak one language and it unites people from different religious backgrounds, ages and sex.
I would like to thank UK Sport for the support you are rendering to Kwenuha Women’s Association to enable it to carry out training programmes and sport activities for vulnerable women in society who had lost direction in their lives. These programmes are really helping in transforming and empowering the vulnerable women and their children.
What do you do at Kwenuha Women’s Association (KWA)?
My involvement in sport as a member of Kwenuha Women’s Association has seen me attending different sport activities as well as training in which I have acquired many skills. My participation in the active women’s course and leadership course has helped me to be more assertive and I have raised a great sense of awareness. I understand myself very well and I know what is good and what is not good for me in my life.
How has KWA helped you personally?
My personal experience in sport has helped me to abscond from vices such as beer drinking, drug abuse and sexual immorality, which are harmful to my life. The discipline I have acquired through my involvement in sport has helped me to gain responsibilities within the organisation.
I have represented the organisation at different levels of training in sport. Notable ones are the Kicking AIDS Out Leader level 1 and the football instructor’s course. The organisation now considers me to be among its notable disciplined and responsible members, leading and facilitating different sports activities.
The organisation has built confidence in me because of my positive attitude to change especially through sport and my ability to deliver information or skills to other members of the organisation and the community at large.
How has your contribution to KWA helped your community?
I am encouraging the community to get involved in sport so that they can enjoy the benefit of sport in their lives. I have been using my personal experience in sport to encourage and motivate society at large regardless of their age or sex to get involved. The community is now looking up to me as a role model and has great respect for me.
I am also encouraging the youths who attend training to grasp the knowledge they acquire and use it in their daily lives for their own benefit and that of the community at large.
We have groomed youths who are now able to use the life skills they acquired from training sessions, especially the Leadership Course. They now act as leaders of different sports activities within clubs and are performing wonders.
