London will play host to the Track Cycling World Championships in 2016. The 6,000 seat, 250 metre track Olympic Velodrome will host the annual event where Great Britain picked up nine Olympic and 15 Paralympic medals in 2012.
"This is another great coup for British sport and a real legacy from London 2012, UK Sport’s Gold Event Series is helping to cement this country’s reputation as a leading destination to host the biggest events in world sport.” " said Minister for Sport Hugh Robertson.
The event, which was hosted by Manchester in 1996, 2000 and 2008, last took place in London in 1904.
The decision to award the event to London was made by the management committee of the International Cycling Union (UCI ) in Florence, Italy in September 2013.
