There is a reason why cats have nine lives as demonstrated by this amusing video!

For all animal lovers out there, no cats were harmed during the making of this video clip.

Cats, being the inquisitive creatures they are, had to try and defy gravity and show us there is no need for a loft ladder…..you simply leave the loft like this……:

OK, we don’t need to tell you not to try this yourself at home, but we will anyway……Don’t Try this at home, you’ve been warned!

The mistake the cat made was leaving the loft facing forward. The basic principle of walking down any ladder (not just a loft ladder) is to climb down it backwards so you are facing the ladder. That way you have the frame or handrails of the ladder to hold on to for support.

Never climb down a ladder facing forwards, unlike the cat, you might not be so lucky.

Is this the most dangerous step ladder ever?

100 foot step ladder

This image will be familiar to fans of Harry Potter’s Order of the Phoenix where the image of the snarling caretaker Argus Filch climbing a teetering 100 foot stepladder to nail the Orwellian Proclamations to a stone wall is repeated quite often throughout the film.

Perhaps a good lesson to us all – not to repeat what we see! Unfortunately there will be no potentially powerful wizard who comes to our aid to make things all good again!

The image rather brings to mind an enormous stepladder found in a quaint library where the user quickly hops up it in order to retrieve a dusty top shelf novel; indeed such an image immediately brings thoughts of vast libraries in grand houses filled with impossibly high shelves.

Harry Potter learnt in the Order of the Phoenix, ‘Neither can live whilst the other survives’ When it comes to the ladder Vs the Human, we can safely say that the Human should never attempt to use such a dangerous stepladder and the ladder really needs to go!

Working safely at height – selecting the right equipment

Rather than reach out for a ladder, take a few steps to consider how to complete the job in the safest way.

  •  Firstly, identify the type of works that need to be carried out at height.

 

  • Secondly assess whether other safer means of access could be used such as scaffold towers. For low level work, consider using low level platforms such as kick stools or hop ups.

The key point to remember is that ladders should only be used for short durations of time and for lighter duties. A ladder is an indispensable item if used correctly and in the right circumstances.

Choose the right ladder for the job – there are many types of ladders, from step ladders, leaning ladders to combination ladders.

If a ladder is necessary for the nature of your work you must ensure the ladder you are using is the right length and strength for the job it is being used for. Ladders must be the correct length for the job intended and must be used safely. Ladder Safety – how safe is your ladder?

Ladders are a versatile product that many home-owners and tradespeople take for granted. After all, a ladder can give many years valuable service and unlike other items such as tools, never show any signs of something not being quite right with them until the inevitable accident occurs.

  •  The first consideration is to ensure that your ladder is suitable for the purpose intended. If you intend using your ladder to carry out your trade, your ladder must conform to EN131 Part 1 & 2 1993 certified. This must not be confused with weaker non certified ladders for DIY use only.

Walking under a ladder – exactly what does this bad luck mean?

Obviously this scenario very much depends on whether or not you are superstitious! If you aren’t then clearly you won’t care whether you have walked under a ladder or round a ladder!

So where does the superstition arise from?

Well you could apply the boring explanation that by walking underneath a ladder you risk getting a tin of paint on your head or something fall on you but there is a rather more deep reasoning why people absolutely will not walk underneath a ladder!

Consider a couple of myths:

  •  Within the Christian nations, the ladder forms the sacred triangle – each side representing either the Father, Son or Spirit (trinity.) This ‘theory’ applies whether the ladder is standing or leaning against a
  • wall. To walk through the ‘triangle’ is breaking the trinity, making you in league with the Devil!
  •  Other theories suggest the ladder has connections with public hangings at the gallows – where a raised platform (such as a ladder) would be used to carry out the hangings. Anything relating to hangings would of course have bad luck attached to it.

 

If you do have the ‘misfortune’ to find yourself walking under a ladder there are a few things you can do to reverse the ‘bad luck!’

1) Spit 3 times through the rungs of the ladder or on your shoe – if you spit on your shoe don’t look at your shoe again until the spit has dried. (Yes really!)

2) Walk backwards underneath the ladder again. This effectively reverses what you’ve just done!

3) Keep your fingers crossed until you find a dog – hopefully a friendly one, or else you really won’t be having a good day!

4)You could just stop believing in luck – or maybe you don’t believe in bad luck in any case, and keep on walking!
