Partytime at HISC exhibition
The "Partytime at HISC" exhibition is taking shape, and as a taster we are now showing some of the Archive Collection's original documents and memorabilia in the Dining Room . . . These are in the right hand cabinet for safe keeping and cover a large number of years . . .
We are very fortunate to have these original items to show. The complete exhibition will feature HISC organised Parties from the early 1950s, ranging from Summer Balls, Fitting Out and Laying up Suppers, Christmas Parties, Barbeques and themed parties such as Halloween.
We have a huge collection of Party photographs which we will be showing in the next few months. These have taken a considerable time to gather, identify, date and subsequently display.
One of the earliest files we hold is the former Secretary Manager, Paul Covell's organising file for the Golden Jubilee Ball in 1971, and this has produced some fascinating information for the exhibition. We have also collected many stories of other Parties.
Please take time to look at the cabinet in the Dining Room in the meanwhile.
Belinda Cook and Léonie Austin.
Power of the Internet
The recent Moth World Championship at HISC was a example of the power of the Internet to distribute news and information worldwide . . . An International event such as the Moth championship, involving a cutting-edge dinghy that attracts the worlds top sailors to compete, is of great interest to sailing enthusiasts everywhere . . .
The difference in the world of instant communication is that "spectators" around the world can, in almost real time, follow events that only recently they would have waited weeks to hear about - and sailing being an almost media free sport as far as the general news media is concerned - months.
An example of the difference a major event has is seen in the figures for the Moth Worlds. HISC website attracts betwwen 500 and 600 visitors a day, looking at 3,000 to 4000 pages of information at this time of the year.
With the start of the Worlds that number went to 1,875 on the opening day, 2,500 when Mike Lennon won the Nationals and stayed at around that figure for the entire event, looking at up to 10,000 pages per day.
Most of this of course was in the Moth Event pages area: news, results, entries, videos etc. Over the ten days of the event 20,000 vists to the website looked at 83,000 pages of information.
HISC also runs a Facebook page and images and brief items were posted there each day. Before the event the average Total Reach was 789 per day, and during the event this averaged 18,000 per day. On the 17 July we hit an amazing peak of 70,562 for that one day, with a total reach of 186,000 for the ten day period of the event.
Figures like this, of dedicated sailing enthusiasts, are gold-dust to sponsors. And these are just the club website. The class had an official worlds site and sailing media around the world was receiving daily press releases and images.
It is difficult to imagine a world before the Internet but the quality of sailing event reporting still varies widly, with some big events having suprisingly poor Internet presence - one major dinghy championship event this week resorted to Tweeting images of pages of the results. - GJN
Notes:
HISC has had a website since Nov 1997.
Visits to date this year are 117,957 viewing 992,361 pages.
Total Reach is the number of people who were served any activity from the HISC Facebook page, including posts and posts by other people,
BBC Sailing Show live from HISC
Sir Robin Knox-Johnson presented his BBC Radio Solent programme, The H2O Show, live from the Hayling Island SC balcony on Thursday . . . Among his guests were the Race Officers for the International Moth World Championships and two of the top competitors, Mike Lennon, the new British Champion and former World Champion Nathan Outterridge, who is leading the 2014 championship with one day to go . . .
Bridging the gap - HISC Get Racing Club
The new HISC Get Racing Club has been hugely successful in bridging the gap between the experienced, core group of racing members and those standing on the shore wishing to get into racing for the first time . . . Launched at the start of this season the club relies on experienced member volunteers to assist those members keen to have a go at racing by offering tips, skills and coaching as well as putting on a series of informal races on selected Saturday’s . . .
The last two weekends in June saw another two highly successful Get Racing Club events with a good number and mix of boats attending including RS 200’s, RS Qubas, Lasers and RS Visions. Both weekends saw sunshine and good winds which enabled the participants to build their confidence and develop their racing skills in a fun and friendly, learning environment.
The volunteer mentors, all highly experienced racing members, focused on key themes including getting to the start line in time and use of outhauls, downhauls and kicking straps; a real improvement was seen amongst the Get Racing Club participants in terms of their race starts and sailing skills by the end of the sessions.
Mentoring tips and advice have progressed at the most recent event, to working on helming skills to achieve a more efficient line through the water and moving around the boat more dynamically in response to wind changes to keep the boat speed consistent.
The racing last weekend was fun and relaxed with several capsizes due to the shifty and gusty wind conditions; the 200’s dominated the day and were the overall winners.
Special thanks go to the HISC Mentors Andy and Karen Partington, Nick and Kate Peters, Jude, Steve Storey, Graham Williamson and Mark Pollington who gave up their time and teaching skills to put on the most recent HISC Get Racing Club events.
