Rowing
Row Boat Hire
Row boat hire was introduced to Alton Water during the summer of
2010 and was an instant hit with visitors to the area. We offer
beautiful blue and white 16' rowboats either single or double oars,
subject to your choice. The boats are stable and designed for lake or
estuary use.
Maximum load weight is 300kgs which equates to 4 averaged sized adults /
2 adults and 3 or 4 children dependant on size. Buoyancy aids and
lifebelts are provided. No special clothing is required, so you can
just turn up and go as part of your day trip.
If members or day visitors wish bring their own rowing boats
(inflatable's not permitted) for use on the water, they will be welcome
providing that the craft is first inspected and approved by the centre
manager and a payment in respect of our day access fee is made.
Alton Rowing Club
Alton Rowing Club was first established at the end 2012, and are
expanding extremely quickly with new members joining frequently and a
growing collection of boats. The Club are running free taster sessions on
Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays for those that would like to give it a
go, and for those that wish to take their skills to the next level, we
are running a series of very comprehensive courses for young people aged
between 12 and 18 entitled
Learn2Row, from Monday to Friday, 8am
to 6pm, over the summer. There is an adult programme too which will run
over a series of weekends.
The course structure includes the following:
- basic rowing skills
- rowing in crews
- safety - capsize drills and swimming test
- the importance of nutrition, healthy eating and sleep
- strength and conditioning, and stretching
- environment and wildlife at Alton Water
- games, fun activities and competitions
The only requirement is that applicants for
the course are able to swim a minimum of 50metres. No prior rowing
experience is necessary.
The highly comprehensive course, priced at £350 for the week for young
people (which also includes 1 year membership to Alton Rowing Club and a
1 year membership to British Rowing) is fantastic value for the hours
and content (it works out at just £7 per hour!), and could develop into
greater sporting achievements in the future. The Olympic Legacy, for
example, is a fantastic thing for young people to aspire to, with Helen
Stanning and Helen Glover being notable role models from London 2012.
