Kids learn to sail courses at Hove Lagoon, Brighton.

Kids can learn to sail at Hove Lagoon from the age of 6 with the RYA learn to sail stage 1 and Stage 2 courses. Kids age 12 plus may wish to consider our youth coastal sailing course on the sea from Brighton Marina.

Hove Lagoon, Brighton is the perfect place for children to learn to sail :

• The water is shallow so kids can stand and rest at any point
• It is sheltered form the strongest winds but by the sea benefits from sea breezes
• Small so the water does not get rough and kids can easily get to the sides.
• Hove Lagoon centre is inspected by AALA, BWSW and the RYA.
• Excellent clubhouse facilities with Café and free wireless internet.
• Staff are RYA qualified, friendly, experienced, approachable and CRB checked.
• Water quaility is monoitored regularly by the Environment Agency and brighton and Hove City Council

We recommend kids start sailing with the Kids RYA Dinghy stage 1 course (See tab above for dates, times, prices), once they have completed this and love it then go on to the Kids RYA Dinghy stage 2 course. (See tab above for dates, times, prices) When you book both courses you save £65 making the price £275.

For young sailors that have gained the Stage 2, certificate can move on to more advanced Stage 3 and stage 4 courses whcih are run on the sea from our Brighton Marina Centre. (See tab above for dates, times, prices)

Kids Dinghy Sailing Stage 1

RYA Youth Sailing Stage 1

The RYA Youth Sailing Stage 1 course will introduce a basic understanding of how a boat sails.

Course Content Includes:

• Basic sailing with some experience of steering and handling the boat
• Launching and recovery 
• Parts of the boat
• Basic sailing

RYA Dinghy Stage 1 Course at Lagoon Watersports

• Run by highly experienced and friendly RYA instructors
• All specialised equipment is provided, including wetsuits
• Suitable for complete beginners or those with a little experience
• Group sizes are kept to a maximum of 8 children
• Master the basics of sailing a small dinghy
• Perfect learning location of Hove Lagoon combining shallow and flat water right next to the sea to make the most of the sea breezes

Course Objective: At the end of the course you will have a basic understanding of how a boat sails

Prerequisites: None. 
Suitability: Age 6+

Kids Dinghy Sailing Stage 2

RYA Youth Sailing Stage 2

The RYA Youth Sailing Stage 2 course is to improve basic sailing skills and become a more confident sailor.

Course Content Includes:

• Improve basic sailing skills
• Ropework
• Collision avoidance and turning

Youth Sailing Stage 2 at Lagoon Watersports

• Run by highly experienced and friendly RYA instructors
• All specialised equipment is provided, including wetsuits
• Suitable for those with RYA Youth Sailing Stage 1 or similar experience
• Group sizes are kept to a maximum of 8
• Perfect learning location of Hove Lagoon combining shallow and flat water right next to the sea

Course objective: At the end of the course you will be able to tack and control the boat at some speed.

Prerequisites: RYA Youth Sailing Stage 1 or equivalent experience. 

Suitability: Age 6+

What to bring: All you need to bring is a swimsuit, towel and footwear suitable for getting wet. We sell neoprene shoes in the office. Wetsuit, buoyancy aid and equipment hire is included.

Kids Coastal Dinghy Sailing Stage 3

The RYA Yourth Sailing Stage 3 course will get you sailing faster and more efficiently.

• Rigging
• Launching and recovery
• Sailing techniques
• Capsize recovery
• Sailing theory

RYA Youth Sailing Stage 3 at Lagoon Watersports

• Run by highly experienced and friendly RYA instructors
• All specialised equipment is provided, including wetsuits
• Suitable for those with RYA Youth Sailing Stage 2 or similar experience
• This course is run from our coastal centre at Brighton Marina.

Course Objective: At the end of this course you will be able to competently launch and sail a dinghy round a triangle in suitable conditions.

Prerequisites: RYA Youth Sailing Level 2 and some sailing in between courses

Suitability: Age 8+

Kids Coastal Dinghy Sailing Stage 4

RYA Youth Sailing Stage 4

The RYA Youth Sailing Stage 4 course will improve your sailing skills further so that you will not only be able to crew or helm a single or double handed boat.

Course Content Includes:

• Rigging, launching and recovery
• Sailing techniques and manoeuvres in crewed boats
• Recovering a man overboard

RYA Youth Sailing Stage 4 at Lagoon Watersports:

• Run by highly experienced and friendly RYA instructors
• All specialised equipment is provided, including wetsuits
• Suitable for those with RYA Youth Sailing Stage 3 or similar experience
• This course is run from our coastal centre at Brighton Marina.

Course Objectives: At the end of the course you will be able to competently launch and sail a dinghy round a triangle in suitable conditions to the level where we would allow children members to hire on the sea.


PLEASE NOTE: If the instructor decides that the client has not met the standards of RYA Dinghy Stage 4 they will not be signed off. We can then arrange for some extra tuition after the course.

Suitability: Age 8+

Kids Private Sailing

Private 1 : 1 RYA sailing lessons at Hove Lagoon  offer an intensive way of learning a new sport or mastering new skills to enhance your child's dinghy sailing. The lesson includes tuition, equipment hire and an hour practice time afterwards (if the instructor deems ability to be suitable).

Suitability : Classes are suitable for all abilities from complete beginners to improvers from age 5 upwards. If a non swimmer please inform us in advance

What to Bring : Something to wear under the wetsuit which we provide, something to wear on their feet in the water (old trainers are great) and a towel for drying off afterwards.

Guide Price: £59 for the first person and £29.50 for the second, £14.75 for third and fourth person. Max 4 people.
