Marlow Ropes boost for rising star Martin

Rising windsurfing talent Kieran Martin is the latest recipient of the British Sailing Team’s Marlow Ropes Award, which will give him free rope for a year as he makes the step-up from Youth to Olympic classes racing.

The Marlow Ropes Award was introduced in 2002 with the aim of rewarding Britain’s most promising young sailors for their determination, focus and talent.

After being invited to join the British Sailing Team’s Podium Potential Squad in 2013 following an exceptional year in the RYA Youth National Squad, the Marlow Award kick-starts an exciting new year for Martin who will now test his mettle in the men’s RS:X senior windsurfing fleet after bowing out of the RYA Youth Racing programme in impressive style.

The 18-year-old from Cheadle had an exceptional final year in the RS:X Youth class, winning the 2013 RYA Youth National Championships in Largs, Scotland in impressive style to secure his place in RYA Team GBR for the second consecutive year – the GBR team to compete at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Limmassol, Cyprus.

With a point to prove after finishing ninth at the 2012 Youth Worlds regatta in Dublin Bay, Ireland, the young Olympic hopeful went out all guns blazing and clinched the RS:X ISAF Youth Worlds title by a staggering 20 points to etch his name on the prestigious trophy alongside past winners including Sir Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy and Sarah Ayton.

On winning the Marlow Ropes Award, Martin said: “It feels really good to have been awarded the Marlow Ropes Award and to be recognised for all the hard work and commitment I have put into my sailing over the past year.

The Marlow award entitles the Carsington Water Sailing Club starlet to free Marlow rope for a year, which Martin says will be invaluable as he launches himself into his first Olympic cycle.

“Having an unlimited supply of Marlow Rope which is known for being top quality rope will be invaluable throughout my new Olympic campaign. Knowing that I will now be able to set up my equipment with new systems and with new rope at each event and knowing that nothing will break will be a great confidence boost when racing at future regattas.”

Barrie Edgington, British Sailing Team Podium Potential Squad Manager, commented: “The support by Marlow Ropes of the young talent in the British Sailing Team Podium Potential programme continues to make a real difference to those starting out on their Olympic campaigns.

“Kieran is a great example of identified and supported talent whose performances have singled him out as a worthy recipient of the first Marlow Award of 2014.”

Edgington concluded: “Confidence in your equipment is key and having the best available rope will certainly assist Kieran to focus on the bigger picture as he moves exclusively from RS:X Youth into the more rarefied environment of the senior RS:X Olympic class racing this year.”

British rope manufacturer Marlow Ropes continues to expand their US presence by announcing that ProDrive anti-torsion rope, the world's leading textile solution for code zero and top down furling sails, will now be distributed in the States by sailcloth manufacturer Dimension Polyant's US branch. Dimension's ubiquitous presence in lofts from coast to coast will ensure the product is available quickly and at a reasonable cost to the greatest possible number of sailmaking customers.

"Marlow Ropes have a global reputation as being the best at what we do, as do Dimension Polyant which why this partnership to distribute ProDrive to sail makers in the US is a perfect fit," said Marlow Managing Director Jon Mitchell. "Both brands hang their hat on technical innovation, service, and quality, so we're confident this will be a strong and long lasting association which will further enhance our expanding US business."
D/P President John Gluek commented that “DIMENSION-POLYANT Sailcloth Technology puts a great deal of thought and research into any potential product before we represent it. In this case we were well aware of the ProDrive product and its’ performance. When Marlow made it available, our focus, therefore, was on adding convenience to the system. By bundling the termination clamps from Colligo Marine, adhesive heat shrink, and a detailed spec sheet with usage instructions, we’ll save the sail maker valuable time during the ordering process and bring the system that much closer to a turnkey solution. The D/P sales team brings to the table a solid background in technical cloth manufacturing, sail making and world class racing experience. As service oriented personnel, we can provide solid sailing recommendations including our new Marlow brand.”
For more information on Marlow products in general or Pro Drive specifically please call Marlow's US Sales & Marketing Office on (508) 830-0444 or visit www.marlowropes.com Dimension Polyant's range of sailcloth and sail making hardware can be found online at www.dimension-polyant.com or by calling 1-860-928-8300.

Marlow's New SPIE Rope Range Launched Print E-mail
Friday, 26 July 2013 00:00
Marlow ropes take personnel insertion and extraction to new heights.
Marlow have developed 3 new S.P.I.E. (Special Patrol Insertion and Extraction) ropes. The standard SPIE for land based activities, the SPIE WPX and the SPIE DPX for waterborne operations.
Marlow were the first company to develop the F.R.I.E.S. (Fast Rope Insertion & Extraction System). Designed as a multi use product for rapid personnel deployment and extraction, this reduces the risk to helicopters and personnel.
New for 2013 the Marlow S.P.I.E. takes development of extraction ropes further as well as increasing the number of personnel from 6 to 12 who can be transported with increased safety. The S.P.I.E. has an integrated loop system which is colour coded for easy personnel attachment. The green primary loop holds the load under normal conditions. The larger red loop offers a back up if the primary attachment is miss aligned or in the unlikely event of a failure will carry the load.
There is a further yellow loop at the top of the assembly where a short lanyard can be attached to aid S.P.I.E. retrieval. Particularly useful when attached to loading hook below the helicopter.
The standard S.P.I.E. is manufactured from Opti-Twist polyester which offers low shock loads and improves abrasion resistance. This S.P.I.E. works well on land and is heavy enough not to be affected by downdraft.
The S.P.I.E. WPX is a light weight floating option for waterborne operations. Manufactured from Polysteel the product floats allowing personnel to connect to the line from the water. The unique construction ensures low shock loads when personnel are lifted.
The S.P.I.E. DPX is manufactured from UHMPE which offers a super strong, lightweight and highly abrasion resistant option. The S.P.I.E. DPX can be used in both waterborne and land based operations. UHMPE is resistant to most chemicals and extended UV exposure.
Standard S.P.I.E. length is 40m, custom lengths can be manufactured on request. If you require further information please contact the Marlow head office.
