RYA Start Sailing (level 1), Basic Skills (level 2), Better Sailing (level 3)

Tuesday 2nd August to Friday 5th AUGUST 2016

ABOUT YOUR COURSE

The 4 day course follows the syllabus for the RYA National Sailing Scheme Junior Levels 1, 2 and 3 and Adult Levels 1 and 2. They are all aimed at getting you to be able to sail safely on your own or with a crew in moderate conditions. The course will utilize Picos, a Wayfarer and a Wanderer for crewed boats and Toppers for single handers. Although the course will be as practical as possible with the majority of the time spent on the water, the nature of the course calls for some theory work and land drills to be included.

Cost of course £150 per person.

The course will start after the introductory meeting held at 9:00am Tuesday morning. Activities will finish between 4:00 and 5:00pm each day.

  • We will provide boats and buoyancy aids. You are welcome to bring and use your own equipment, however it is recommended that it is suitably marked as Beaver Sailing Club cannot take responsibility for any loss or damage. Any student using their own boat must ensure that it has minimum third party insurance of £1,000,000
  • Footwear and Clothing: You will need to provide your own footwear and clothmg. The type of clothing will be dependant on the conditions, but ensure that you have sufficient warm clothing. It is certain that at some time during the course you will get wet; therefore a change of clothing is essential. For footwear an old pair of trainers is OK, although wetboots would be ideal. Clothing should include a waterproof jacket; it occasionally rain during a British summer.
  • Food and Drink: We will also provide hot and cold drinks during the course but you will be required to provide your own packed lunch and any snacks.
  • Other useful items: Please bring high factor sun cream. A peaked cap and sunglasses may also be useful.
  • Logbooks: The logbooks and other relevant literature relevant to your course will be provided

If you require any further information please contact Alan Windhurst on 01302 883 773 / 0794 3610503 or Matt Grayson on 07707992014 / email

Beaver Marathon 2016

image

The 2016 Beaver Marathon is fast approaching. This years event will be sailed on Saturday 18th June. This has been the highlight of the club racing calendar since the early 1970′s. It was started by Joe Sykes, the commodore, to give members a fun day and a real sailing test.

What is the Beaver Marathon ? It is a ten hour race sailed from 10.00 until 20.00. Each boat is sailed in relays by two teams. You change as many times as you want to and the result is worked out as an average corrected lap time. The race is open to any dinghy or catamaran. Over the history of the race the winner has come from many different classes, mono hulls and cats. Every boat has the chance to win. It is the sort of race where the tortoise often beats the hare !

The marathon is an unusual race because all day only half the crews are on the water and the other half are ashore watching. It can be a frustrating experience watching your boat being sailed by someone else.

The galley will be open all day and the club barbecue will be fired up in the evening.

The record entry is 26 so get your teams sorted and let Peter Hone know you are taking part. You have to be in it to win it.

Bird Prevention Not Sail Prevention 2016

image Do not be put off by the fences we are open as usual.

Last years experiment with fencing was very successful in keeping the geese out so we have put in place Bird Prevention 2016. While there is some inconvenience for members the benefits clearly outweigh this. Without them the grass will become unusable during the summer months. This year we have fenced all of the shore rather than just the jetties and slipways.

While the fences are in place please remember to close the slipway gates before you leave. We should be able to look forward to many more picnics on the grass.

YHYSA Youth Regatta 16th April

The Yorkshire & Humberside Youth Sailing Association are having a regatta at Beaver SC on Saturday 16th April. This will be the first event in the 2016 YHYSA Travellers Series. The event is open to all sailors who are under 19. All types of boat can take part and will consist of three handicap races with the first start at 11.30. Registration and entry from 09.30.

The galley will be open all day with hot lunch available.

What better way to get your 2016 racing season started.

Winter Jobs

It is that time of the year when we try to get on top of maintenance around the club. We have identified a variety of projects which need our attention. These can be found on the white board in the classroom. These range from major work like clearing the area beyond the dinghy park. The road, car park and dinghy park. Plus a selection of quite small jobs. Help with any of these is most appreciated.

Of the bigger jobs, Quentin and team have started with clearing the undergrowth/trees along the north bank. They have made a great start and intend to continue over the coming weeks.

The work to the road, car and dinghy parks was due to begin in the autumn but the never ending rain prevented this from getting started. Things are starting to dry out and with a bit of luck we can turn our attention to this work before too long. This is now a bigger job than it was in the autumn. The potholes have got much worse with all the standing water we have had.

Winter Series Galley

The galley will be open throughout the Winter Series and three Saturday’s when we have visiting training squads. This will be January 16th/17th, 24th and 31st. February 6th/7th, 14th, 20th/21st and 28th.

Hot food will be available on all of these days. Just order on arrival so the galley know the number requiring lunch.

Winter Series 2016

imageThe 2016 Winter Series is fast approaching. First day is Sunday 10th January.

8 Sundays in January and February 2016. Four 30 minute races each Sunday ( 2 races back to back, lunch, 2 races back to back). 11 am start. Entry fee £20.00 ( £25 for visiting competitors ) for the whole series payable on the first Sunday you race. (alternative payment of £5.00 per day if you can only manage a couple of Sundays)

These guys would have loved to have taken part in the Winter Series. But they were too busy building a sailing club.

Frostbite 2015

imageThe 2015 Frostbite Series begins on Sunday 25th October. This will comprise of nine weeks sailing with two races per day. Start times are 12.00 and 14.00. The format is all in Handicap. You need to take part in 10 of the 18 races to qualify for the overall series.

The picture shows some of the founding members. They were probably going to go sailing in the clothes they are wearing. This would have been before there was a clubhouse or slipways or jetties. I am sure they would approve of where we are today with the facilities we now have.

Beaver SC Squad Members 2015/16

Yet again Beaver is well represented in winter training squads for 2015-16. We have sailors in a variety of classes at all levels. Poppy Wright and Trent Duhrkoop are again in the RYA Topper Zone Squad. Tom Parkhurst also gets a second year in the RYA Topper Intermediate National Squad. Ellie Brown should make the RYA Radial Youth Squad given her results this year. And we have Jack and Henry Wetherell in the British Sailing Team Podium Potential Squad.

An exciting new development this winter with a strong Beaver representation is the RS 200 Northern Youth Squad. This will give our sailors and others across the north of England access to top coaching and competition through the winter months. 2016 will have very interesting racing in the 200 fleet. Reg and Emma Grayson, Sam Waller and George Stainforth and Esther Parkhurst and Oliver Groves are flying the flag for Beaver. Martin Penty is part of the coaching team.

2015 Presentation Dinner

The 2015 Annual Prize Giving Dinner was held at the club on Saturday 12th September 2015. Yet again the club had an incredible transformation from sailing club in the afternoon to perfect party venue in the evening. The guests went through the same process from wet and windswept to evening glamour.

A super meal was followed by prizes. Biggest haul went to Stuart who seems to have dominated the Mirrors this year, with Julie showing the Toppers the way to go. It is always amazing to realise that over the season how many people have found their way to or close to the front of the fleet. Well done everyone.

The finale of the presentation was the Commodores Trophy which this year went to Martin Penty in recognition of his many years of service to the club. Much of Martins contribution takes place behind the scenes dealing with all manner of important, and often complicated issues. Very well deserved.

Thanks should go to all of the clubhouse management team who made the evening possible. Special thanks to Helen for taking the lead and making sure it all came together.
