We need to make sure that this Facebook account belongs to you before we let you reset your password. If you have an email address with Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo! listed on your Facebook account, you may have the option to reset your password immediately. Instead of waiting for an email with a special link or code, you can enter your email login info and reset your password.

Password tips:

  • Pick something different from other passwords you use
  • Use a combination of at least 6 numbers, letters and punctuation marks (ex: "!", ";")
  • Don't use words found in the dictionary

Facebook stores your password in such a secure way that we don't know what it is, and we can only check if it's correct. If you can't remember your password, you can request a new password.

Please keep in mind that if you are already logged in, you can change your password from your settings.

If you're locked out of your account, you can use trusted contacts to get access to your account. If you have trusted contacts set up:

  1. Click Forgot your password? and find your account.
  2. Follow the instructions to use your trusted contacts to get back into your account.
  3. You'll receive a set of instructions that includes a URL. The URL contains a special security code that only your trusted contacts can access. Call your friends and give them the URL so that they can open the link and give the security code to you.
  4. Use the security codes from your friends to access your account.

If you don't have trusted contacts set up, learn how.

Please be sure to call your friends or talk to them in person. If your account was hacked, the hacker could have access to your emails as well.

If you're having trouble logging into your account from the Find Your Account page, try these tips:

  • Ask one of your Facebook friends to look at the About page of your Timeline and send you the email address listed in the Contact Info section.
  • Try entering every email address or mobile number you've owned (one at a time). You may have added an email address or mobile number to your account and forgotten about it.
  • Enter your username. Your username is your personalized Facebook URL:

If you don't know your username, ask a friend to go to your Timeline and send you the username in the URL.
  • Try entering variations of your name, just in case you signed up using a nickname.
  • If you're asked to enter a friend's name, try a variety of friends if the first friend you try doesn't locate an account. Remember to enter your friend's full name, not just their first name.

If you think your account was hacked, get help here.

Maintaining Access to Your Account

If there ever comes a time where you can’t log into your Facebook account, we need ways to get in touch with you and make sure the account is yours. Here are some things you can do to help make sure you never get locked out of your account:

  • Add another email address to your account so you always have a backup.
  • Make sure you and only you can access the email addresses listed on your Facebook account. Anyone with access to one of the email addresses listed on your account can request a new password for your Facebook account. If you lose access to one of your extra email addresses, be sure to remove it from your Facebook account.
  • Add your mobile number to your account. We can also send things (ex: a code to reset your password) to your mobile phone.
  • Use your real name and date of birth on your account so we can find your Timeline if you ever lose access to it.
