Meet your August “On The Rise” featured partner - CookingAndCrafting

Please join us in congratulating Beth from CookingAndCrafting, our featured “On The Rise” partner for August 2013. Beth’s channel is in the spotlight on the YouTube home channel and the On The Rise homepage today.

Beth hails from Hawaii and has been creating YouTube videos since 2006. She hopes to inspire people to cook their own meals through her fast and easy approach to cooking and baking. If you’re hungry, Beth can show you how to make the best potato soup you’ll ever eat (no really, the best!) and can help you satisfy that sweet tooth with molten butterscotch cakes. You might be feeling creative today, and Beth’s channel can also walk you through some neat crafts - Star Wars fans will love this easy-to-follow tutorial on making a Princess Leia headband. Check out her channel for other fun, family-friendly meal or craft ideas.

Here are a few words from Beth:
I started vlogging in 2006 and as I was vlogging, I would sometimes make a craft while chatting, or take my subscribers into the kitchen with me when making dinner. About three years ago, my sister and I decided that we would open a channel focusing on fast and easy cooking, baking and crafting, sometimes mixing in a little bit of humor and island flavors. I am amazed at how many incredible people from all over the world that I get to meet on a daily basis. I am so thankful to my awesome subscribers and friends who constantly support me through all of my endeavors. You.are.the.best!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
If you’ve enjoyed this monthly blog series and are interested in learning more or participating, we encourage you to visit our On The Rise homepage. You can check out all of our past featured partners on the Featured Partners tab, or nominate a YouTube partner to be considered for the program on the Nominate tab. Feel free to submit nominations for your own channel, or for channels you follow that you think deserve more attention or could be the next YouTube sensation. We’ll continue to feature promising partners who drive YouTube watch time, have fewer than 100,000 subscribers, and produce engaging content on a regular basis.

So long, video responses... Next up: better ways to connect

Helping you connect with your fans is extremely important for you and for us. This includes replacing little-used features with better ones. Currently video responses have a click-through rate of .0004% -- in other words, only 4 out of every 1 million users who sees a video response clicks on it. So, on September 12 we’re going to retire this little-used feature as we work to develop more effective fan engagement tools for creators. The team is focused on enabling you to share video links in comments. Doing this in comments will let creators and viewers add more context to a video, and more context should drive more engagement.

In the meantime, you can continue to encourage fans to upload videos with specific titles, hashtags or descriptions (e.g., Video Response To Taylor Swift's Video "22"), so you can find these by searching for them. If you want to highlight them, you can use playlists and channel sections instead of displaying these videos below yours. Any video responses you or your fans have made will still be available and discoverable.

Also, to help your audience find more of your channel’s videos we recommend using features like InVideo Programming.

Entertain your fans longer on the YouTube apps for Android and iOS

Now it’s easier for your fans to explore your channel on the latest YouTube apps for Android and for iOS. When fans get to your channel, you can keep them around longer. With the swipe of a finger, they can keep watching your video at the bottom of the screen while exploring the rest of your channel at the same time.

Your playlists, now available on mobile!

In addition to watching your videos and checking out your channel, fans can also now search for playlists on their phones, giving more life to the investment you made in programming them. With the new “Play All” button, your fans can sit back and watch all of your Season 2, making it easier to watch more wherever they happen to be.
Your videos directly to your fans’ personal YouTube jumbotron

The Cast button on YouTube already lets your fans send YouTube videos from the phone or tablet to a connected TV, like on Chromecast, Google TV, Playstation 3 and other TVs. To make it easier to choose what to watch next, they’ll see a preview screen when their devices are connected and they select a video, with options to play the video or queue it up to watch next.

Remember when you updated your channel to the new One Channel format? Well, here’s where it starts to get cool. This new design puts more focus on your beautiful videos with a cleaner, simpler look and makes it easier for viewers to find more to watch on your channel.

Meet your August “On The Rise” nominees!

In our monthly On The Rise program, we identify four partners whose channels drive significant YouTube watch time but haven’t yet reached the 100,000 subscriber mark. With your help, we’re sharing with you four dedicated partners who’d like your help to jumpstart their audience development and channel growth. This August we’re excited to introduce you to partners whose content covers the worlds of beauty, cooking, style, and celebrities.

We hope you enjoy them - and you can actually help these partners succeed further on YouTube. Review their videos below, vote for your favorite here, and one of these candidates will have the opportunity to be featured across YouTube later this month. In addition to your votes, each channel will be evaluated on criteria such as viewer engagement and channel optimization techniques to decide which partner we’ll feature.

In past months, featured On The Rise partners like mathmeeting and starofmay have gained many subscribers and seen their careers take off, in large part due to your support. This month’s poll will be open until August 13, 5pm PT, so don’t forget to vote for your favorite channel. Check back to see which channel will be featured on August 30.

Investing in you: more tools to build your channels

If you’re with us and the thousands of video fans at VidCon, you’ll hear about more ways we’re investing in you on YouTube. We’re here to help you: from promotion to channel management to content optimization, we have the resources and programs to support you. That’s why more of you with accounts in good standing will be able to use a bunch of features you’ve been asking for: live streaming, custom thumbnails, external annotations and series playlists.

Start live streaming if you have 100+ subscribers: All channels in good standing with at least a hundred subscribers will be able to live stream, within the next few weeks. Check your Account Features page for an “Enable” button, and click it if you're interested.

Choose your best thumbnail: Help your video stand out by using a custom thumbnail. Make sure you only upload images that are representative of what viewers will see, like prominent stills from the video.

Drive traffic to your merch: Want viewers to buy that new t-shirt you’re wearing in your video? You can now use annotations to link externally to various online stores and your associated websites.

Program related videos for viewers: Help viewers watch more of your videos by placing them in a series playlist. When you group videos that belong together, we’ll show viewers of your videos the next episode from the series and a link to the whole playlist. Just mark your playlist as a “series” in the playlist settings.

If you want tips on the best ways to use any of these features, learn more from the YouTube Creator Playbook.
