As stated above Adderall is a combination of amphetamine and
dextroamphetamine. This combination of active ingredients
works by restoring the balance of chemicals that control
sleep and impulse. These chemicals are neurotransmitters in
the brain. Just like some antidepressants work to restore
the balance of the chemicals that control mood, Adderall
works to balance those substances that control sleep and
impulse.
Before taking any medication, one should always consult the
pharmacist and read the information provided with the
prescription. This medication is taken orally. It is taken
with or without food. The usual dosage pattern is 1 to 3
times a day with the first dose to be taken in the early
morning.
Like any medication, Adderall has some side effects. These
include loss of appetite, weight loss, dry mouth, upset
stomach, dizziness, headache, fever, nervousness and
disruption of sleep. It may also raise the blood pressure.
If you experience numbness, skin color changes, sensitivity
to temperature in the extremities, changes in mood or
behavior, or any other unusual changes get medical help
right away. Children may be more prone to experience the
side effects than adults may.
While on this medication, avoid taking other medications
that increase the heart rate. Moderate the consumption of
caffeinated beverages such as colas and coffee. Do not use
medications containing lisdexamphetamine. This could cause
an overdose as it contains a similar ingredient.
In the event of an overdose, contact your local poison
control center or the emergency room as soon as possible.
Symptoms of an overdose include extreme mood changes,
seizures, severe headache, restlessness, and breathing
difficulties.
Never share medication with others. It is dangerous and it
is against the law.
If a missed dose occurs in the early morning, go ahead and
take it. If it occurs later in the day, wait until the next
day to resume the normal dosing schedule. Never double a
dose to catch up.
Adderall should be stored at room temperature and away from
light and moisture. Keep all medication safe from children
and pets.
Adderall is a proven treatment for narcolepsy and AD/HD.
