Yachts bobbing in the bay. The sizzle of fish in a seaside restaurant. Buggies rolling through a Victorian park. The carnivalesque sights and sounds of a festival in full-swing. Markets you stumble into by chance, and stumble out of with a first edition, French pastry, or vintage dress.
Dun Laoghaire, and surrounding towns are all about coastal cosmopolitanism. The beauty of a visit, however, is that you can still sense the fishing villages and historic settlements at their core. Think of Dn Laoghaire's Victorian pier, its classical lines extending into Dublin Bay. Think of snappy shops next to Georgian homes in Blackrock, castles side-by-side with contemporary restaurants in Dalkey, or literature, food and music mashed-up in a summer festival.
The Harbour
Dn Laoghaire is the Irish language (Gaelic) name for the town and port, pronounced phonetically as " Doon Layer-eh ", but it is more often pronounced in its English form as "Dun Leary".
From the mountains to the sea, Dun Laoghaire really is a town for all seasons. For many visitors, their first contact with Ireland is the beautiful coastline as they enter Dun Laoghaire, with its spectacular man-made harbour, richness of historic Yacht Clubs and beautiful town.
Within the harbour there are 4 magnificiant Waterfront Yacht Clubs and a state 5 Gold Anchor 820 berth marina. Dublin Bay has played host to many World and European Sailing Championships and more recently is the venue for the Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta and the upcoming ISAF Youth Worlds which will take place in 2012.
Must See
Some 1.3 million people walk Dun Laoghaire's East Pier every year, touching (or kicking!) the 19th-century battery at the harbour mouth before turning back towards shore.
Dublin is a coastal city, but Dubliners spend little time by the coast. That means you can visit Killiney Hill, explore beaches like White Rock near Dalkey, or take the plunge at the famous 40 Foot at Sandycove, whilst rarely having to contend with crowds. Bliss.
If you dont fancy getting into the water, there are plenty of ways to get onto it. Why not take to the ocean with gosailing.ie? You may even see Dublin Bays resident bottlenose dolphins.
Culture & Heritage
The Martello Towers at Seapoint and Sandycove were built to protect against a possible Napoleonic invasion, though the Sandycove tower is best-known for its links with James Joyce. It features in the opening chapter of Ulysses, and houses a museum dedicated to the author (April-August).
Nearby in Dalkey, visitors moseying down Castle Street are often surprised to find two 16th century castles facing one another amidst a lively strip of shops, restaurants and bars. Together with St. Begnet's Church, Goat Castle houses the Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre.
Festivals & Events
Dun Laoghaire offers a rollercoaster programme of festivals and events, ranging from summertime regattas to harbour swims, from a Mad Hatters' Tea Party in April to an Opera Festival in July. Watch out too, for the Dalkey Book Festival in June, the Monkstown Puppet Festival in October, and the annual Christmas markets. Every year brings something new to the coastline.
Shopping
This stretch of coast isn't shy of shopping treats. Take Blackrock's Main Street, with its buzzing shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. Take malls like the Frascati Centre or Bloomfields in Dn Laoghaire. Monkstown hosts a village market on Saturdays, Sundays brings a farmers' market to the People's Park in Dun Laoghaire, and Blackrock Market sells "just about anything worth having" year-round. Its smorgasbord of stalls is located down an alleyway off Main Street.
Dining
Dun Laoghaire, Dalkey, Blackrock and Monkstown began life as fishing villages, and you don't have to look far to find scrumptious seafood today. From beer-battered catch of the day to crab claws and home-smoked salmon crostini, the sea will give you an appetite, and cull it too.
Of course, seafood isn't the only show in town. Dun Laoghaire is bursting with bistros, gastro-pubs and cafes - ditto Dalkey, where Castle Street and the Coliemore Road throw up one dining option after another. The Monkstown Road is another foodie strip with several styles of cuisine.
Did You Know?
The Dublin to Dun Laoghaire line was Ireland's first railway. Opened in 1834, the original track ran some 10 miles from Westland Row to the West Pier in what was then Kingstown.

The social activities centre around the lower informal sailors area and the more formal first floor dining room, bar and balcony. Club members have a strong record for competition at national, international and Olympic level in both dinghy and keelboat classes. The club organise successful all year around junior training programmes for optimist, topper, laser and 420 classes.
Royal Irish Yacht Club - website: www.riyc.ie/
The Royal Irish Yacht Club was founded in Kingstown, Dun Laoghaire, in 1831, making it the oldest Club in the harbour. As regattas began to be held in 1828, the desire for a club became clear. The Club was inspired by the formidable Lord Anglesey, a commander of cavalry at the battle of Waterloo, and who also went on to be the Club's first Commodore.
The Club was, and has remained, a place to meet friends, enjoy cruising and racing, dining in beautiful surroundings, and play billiards. It is a place to relax and a home away from home.
Delegates who wish to Dine at the Royal Irish Yacht Club during the Conference should contact the Catering Manager: T: +353 1 2809452 E: gareth@riyc.ie to make dinner/lunch reservations. The Club will open for dining on all days during the conference apart from Sunday 4th and Monday 5th November.
Royal St George Yacht Club - website: www.rsgyc.ie/
Founded in 1838, the Royal St George Yacht Club has a long history and tradition in Irish sailing and is regarded as one of Irelands leading yacht clubs. The waterside location provides a magnificent setting for the members and visitors to enjoy the period dcor, furniture, paintings and maritime artifacts which are the envy of similar clubs around the world. The premises has been continuously maintained and improved up to the present time resulting in the modern sailing facilities on the lower floor contrasting with the traditional more formal style upstairs. Club members have been to the forefront of sailing in Ireland both in terms of competition and administration. They have competed successfully over the years at World and European level in the top international senior, youth and junior classes. RSGYC members played a major role in the birth and development of the ISA and more than half of the Presidents of that association have come from the club.
