What we do
Although our involvement in offshore renewable energy is most visible in the wind farms out to sea, progress on the wave and tidal projects is advancing rapidly. To add to this we are also involved in natural gas storage and the capture and storage of CO2.
- At a glance
- £39.1 millionrevenue from the Energy and infrastructure portfolio
- £564 millionproperty value of Energy and infrastructure portfolio
- More than £13 millionincome from cables and pipelines in 2012/13
- 3.3 GWof installed capacity is in production from projects
- 2 GWtotal potential capacity of the more than 40 sites for wave and tidal projects we have leased around the UK
- About 2.4 per centof electricity used in the UK comes from offshore wind farms and this continues to grow

Our businesses
We support and partner developers as they work to harness the potential of wind, wave and tide through some of the largest infrastructure projects in the world. To this we add working with industry on carbon capture and natural gas storage beneath the seabed.
- Offshore wind energy
We are playing a major role in developing this industry in the UK. The five rounds of offshore wind have each increased in scale and technical complexity.
- Onshore renewables
Our energy programmes also include onshore projects on the rural estate.
- Carbon capture and storage
We are working with developers to identify how carbon storage beneath the seabed can help the UK meet its targets on carbon emissions.
- Natural gas storage
Fluctuations in supply and seasonal demand have created a need for natural gas storage in the UK.
- Wave and tidal
We are committed to working with industry and stakeholders to successfully exploit the UK's significant wave and tidal energy resources.
- Aggregates
We hold the rights to explore and utilise the natural resources of the UK continental shelf (excluding oil, gas and coal).
- Cables and pipelines
We have a range of processes in place to help cable and pipeline operators meet their business objectives.
- Minerals potash
The main focus of our mineral interests is on the extraction of marine aggregates such as sand and gravel.
