When Ian Williams (GBR) raised the ISAF World Match Racing Championship for the fourth time in 2012 he surpassed some of the all-time greats.
Williams is a formidable force on the match racing scene and from January 2012 held the World #1 Open Ranking spot for 16 consecutive releases, he was untouchable.
Heading into the 2012 Monsoon Cup Williams had brought himself back into contention for the ISAF World Match Racing Championship title having trailed Bjorn Hansen (SWE) early on in the Alpari World Match Racing Tour.
Victory at Match Race France and third place at the Argo Group Gold Cup put Williams within two points of Hansen going into the showpiece event in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia.
Hansen got the better of Williams in the Round Robin and got second pick of Quarter-Final opponents. Bravely, he picked Williams for a World Championship defining match. Unnerved by the pressure the British sailor came from a point behind to take the title.
After four strong results in the 2013 Alpari World Match Racing Tour including victory at Match Race Germany Williams is on track to take a fifth title and become the most decorated ISAF Match Racing champion.
Joining Williams as a male nominee for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year 2013 are Mathew Belcher (AUS), Francois Gabart (FRA), Johnny Heineken (USA) and Paul Larsen (AUS).
