Conservation Area Guides

Conservation Areas are areas of special architectural or historic interest designated by the Department under Artictle 50 of The Planning (NI) Order 1991.
They range in scale from city and town centres to villages and relatively small residential parks and streets.
Conservation Area designation introduces control over the demolition of unlisted property in the area and affords protection to trees. The prime consideration in assessing whether new development proposals are acceptable will be the desirability of preserving or enhancing the character and appearance of these areas. Regional policy for Conservation Areas is set out in PPS 6: Planning, Archaeology and the Built Heritage.
