Inside Google Singapore

In the heart of Southeast Asia, Singapore is the crossroads of commerce for one of the world’s fastest-growing regions.

We are Google’s business headquarters for Asia-Pacific, overseeing operations as we expand our reach to millions of users in a diversity of markets. We work in markets that are just starting to come online, so what we do has a lot of impact on Google’s future and technology in these growing regions. We also embrace our multi-cultural office in many ways.

Home to locals and foreigners alike, we give a distinct twist to the ways we have fun-lah, from Chinese New Year parties to Hari Raya Puasa to Indian holidays to weekly celebrations themed after countries where we do business. We decked out our micro-kitchens to look like traditional street food stalls and our meeting rooms to look like authentic Thai tuk-tuks.

Our office brings together a huge range of Googlers – fitting, in a country with four official languages (English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil).

Google Singapore: Frequently Asked Questions

Who works at Google Singapore?

We bring together locals with Googlers from the far corners of the globe. Between the many multinationals with a presence in Singapore, the excellent opportunities for education (like INSEAD, Nanyang Technological University, the National University of Singapore, and Chicago Booth’s Asia Campus) and Singapore’s status as a hub for business in Southeast Asia, we enjoy a highly qualified pool of potential Nooglers.

In a city rich with history and culture, Googlers come from many different backgrounds. Even our head chef is famous around these parts for cooking up a range of cuisines, from Indonesian to Dutch to Jamaican.

What kind of work do Singagooglers do?

We manage Google’s sales operations in 40 markets across Southeast Asia. We serve big media companies and publishers as well as multinational and small, local advertisers. We’re also home to Googlers in functions like finance, people operations, marketing and legal.

How do Singagooglers help build Google products?

We do quite a bit to customize products for our markets. Our launches have included Translate in Vietnamese, Book Search in Indonesia, News in Malaysia, Maps in Thailand, Movie Showtimes in Singapore and Mapmaker in the Philippines, as well as iGoogle across Southeast Asia.

Is Google Singapore growing?

Faster than an Angsana tree. In 2011, one in five Nooglers in Asia-Pacific was hired into the Singapore office.

How do you embrace the local culture at Google Singapore?

Our weekly celebrations are themed after Southeast Asian holidays and festivals, and our office space is decorated with local flavor, from microkitchens that look like street food stalls to conference rooms made from Thai tuk-tuks.

How are Googlers involved in the Singapore community?

Our Googlers get one-percent of their work time, or two-and-a-half days per year, to spend on volunteer work. We also collaborate on a marketing program with INSEAD, one of the world’s great business schools. And in 2011, we sponsored an event in Singapore’s annual Pink Dot gathering, which celebrates freedom of sexuality.
