Arrival & Departure

Passport and Visas

Arriving before 10 April 2014 - You will be required to pay £10 in English Sterling on arrival in Turkey. Please ensure you have a £10 note with you.
Please ensure your passport is valid for the period of travel and for six months after you return.  Your passport name must match the name on the flight ticket otherwise you may not be able to travel and insurance may be invalid.

If your child is not already included on a valid British Passport they are required to hold their own passport.

Arriving after 9th April 2014 - As from 10 April 2014, it will no longer be possible for passengers travelling to Turkey to buy/obtain a visa upon arrival at entry points in Turkey. Instead passengers should buy an e-Visa online in advance of travelling, valid for their stay.

From the EU Member States, the following citizens(if they hold an ordinary passport) must have a visa independent of the length of their stay:Austria, Belgium,Croatia, Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus, Hungary, Ireland, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, UK.

Please note: a visa is needed only for a stay longer than 3 months for citizens holding passports from Bulgaria,Czech Republic,Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia (30 days), Lithuania, Luxemburg, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden. Please note conditions may apply to e-Visas.

For more information about the Turkish e-Visa please consult the following official websites:

The Republic of Turkey Ministry of Foreign Affairs website: http://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-information-for-foreigners.en.mfa

The Republic of Turkey Electronic Visa Application System website: https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/

e-Visas are already operational in Turkey since 17 April 2013, therefore passengers can use this facility instead of today’s ‘paying at the border’.

If you require an e-Visa, you can apply for one online through the Republic of Turkey Electronic Visa Application System by completing the application form at https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/ and (after the application is approved) paying a fee. In order to apply you will need (i) a passport that is valid for at least six months longer than the expiry date of the requested visa, (ii) a flight (or any other possible means of transportation) reservation and (iii) a credit card (Mastercard or Visa). Each passenger must hold their own e-Visa, including children and minors even if they are included on someone else’s passport. Upon successful application, the e-Visa is e-mailed to the passenger with 24 hours of successful completion of the application.  Applicants must print out their e-Visa, show it to airport officials and customs officers and carry it with them at all times during their travel. You should apply for your e-Visa at least 24 hours before your departure. However you are advised to make an application at least one week before your departure. An e-Visa is only valid for tourism or trade purposes. For other purposes such as work or study, an application must be submitted through the Turkish embassies or consulates.

If you have not applied for and hold a valid e-Visa prior to/at the time of travel you may be denied boarding or admission at the Turkish port of entry. However, possession of an e-Visa does not guarantee admission to Turkey as the Turkish authorities can deny entrance of a holder of an e-Visa to Turkey in certain cases. If you are refused boarding or denied admission at the Turkish port of entry, you will still be subject to our cancellation charges in accordance with the terms of our contract with you.

It is the responsibility of each individual to ensure relevant visas are obtained where necessary. Sunsail cannot be held responsible for refusal of entry or travel due to lack of visas. If you are in any doubt please contact your Embassy for full details.

Customs and Immigration

Before leaving the airport you will have to clear Customs and Immigration.  Customs and Immigration do work on a spot check basis.

Turkey Yacht Charters – Visiting Greece
Turgutreis base: Turgutreis is an entry harbour and the different offices for clearance are in D Marina. Please be aware if visiting Greece you must be back in Turgutreis latest at 1500 hrs if you have to clear in. All the different offices you need for the clearance close at 1700 hrs on Fridays.

The transit log must be surrendered when leaving Turkey and a new one will be reissued on return to Turkey.

We are getting more requests for yacht charter clients wanting to visit Greece from Turgutreis. This is just a few points that need to be considered should you wish to visit Greece:
Yacht Flagging – There are no flag restrictions
Technical back up – please understand that we cannot support you whilst in Greece, and a Sunsail Guarantee Waiver must be signed by you at the base before departure
Prior Notice – Sunsail must have good prior notice should you wish to visit Greece during your charter, so we can ensure that original paperwork is sent to departing base before the charter starts.
Suggested Itinerary - similar itinerary to the flotilla as due to the prevailing winds it is the most sensible way to sail this area.

Turkish charter permits do not allow clients on Turkish bareboat holidays to enter Greek waters unless they have followed the legal clearance procedures.

Luggage

We would highly recommend packing prescription medicine and essential clothing (swimsuit, t-shirt and shorts) in your hand luggage as occasionally your luggage may arrive at the base after you do.
Please pack using soft-sided bags, as these are easier to store on your yacht.

On Arrival

Your yacht will be ready at 1800 hrs for boarding. Chart briefing and Boat briefings will be scheduled. The chart briefing describes the cruising area and any potential hazards.

The yacht briefing introduces you to your yacht, its systems and rigging. It is carried out individually for each yacht. It is important that all systems and equipment are fully understood. Briefings are mandatory. You will be required to purchase a Turkey Transit log on arrival at the base. This cost €85 and is payable locally.

Out of hour’s arrival procedure

For later arrivals notices are placed on a board outside the office informing you of your yacht name and location. For those having taken a transfer the driver is aware of this info and will drop you at your yacht.

On departure

At the end of your charter your yacht will need to be vacated by 0900 hrs so we recommend that you return to the base the day before.
Before departing the boat you will need to collect a debrief form from reception.
The debrief form is to let us know if you encountered any problems with the boat or broken anything during the trip, this enables us to rectify problems for the next charter.

In addition to filling in forms we also require you to bag dirty laundry and leave in the cockpit, empty all cupboards and fridges of food and throw away, return snorkel gear and any lifejackets borrowed from reception and ensure that the boat is handed back to Sunsail in a clean and tidy state.  We reserve the right to charge for boats left less than shipshape.

Sailing Information

Bodrum Peninsula: Sailing Experience Level 2
Experience levels are based on sailing conditions and the length of passages within your chosen sailing area.  Follow the link for more information on the sailing conditions.

Sailing Licences

To charter a yacht in Turkey, there must be at least one skipper and one crew member, both over 18 years old.  The skipper should be competent at handling a yacht in close quarters, anchoring and mooring in varying conditions and be able to use navigation and pilotage skills to plan the day’s sailing and know your position at any time.  As a yacht skipper, you are required to have a sailing license or a certificate from a recognized sailing association as detailed below:

Skipper is REQUIRED to have one (1) of the following:

·         ICC (International Certificate of Competence), International – Prerequisites: RYA “Day Skipper Course” or similar/equivalent certification from any recognized sailing association or complete the ICC Assessment form to prove competence from previous experience.

·         IPC (International Proficiency Certificate), America – Prerequisites: ASA 104 or US Sailing “Bareboat Cruising Course”

AND/OR

·         UK - RYA Day Skipper practical (with our without photo)

·         USA – US Sailing “Bareboat Cruising Course”, ASA “104 Bareboat Cruising Course” or above

·         Germany - Sportbootführerschein See“ or above

·         Belgium - Algemeen Stuurbrevet/ Brevet de conduite général

·         France - LE PERMIS PLAISANCE

·         Or a similar/equivalent certification from any recognized sailing association, including the Sunsail Yacht Cruising Certificate

It is compulsory to have a sailing license for the skipper. This document has to be registered in the transit log and presented to the port authorities.

The standards of certification required remain very vague, however a certificate such as a Sunsail Yacht Cruising Certificate, RYA Day Skipper, ASA’s or U.S. Sailing’s Basic Keelboat (or a similar/equivalent certification from any recognized sailing association) is currently acceptable and an ICC (or IPC as equivalent) is suggested.

Charter Preparation Tips

A copy of sailing certificates must be sent to the base and received at least 2 weeks before the start of the charter.  It is vital that skippers take their original copies of certificates with them, as it is likely that they are requested to present them in person.

What if I do not have a license?

If you do not hold a recognized sailing license, we will assist you with pre-qualification based upon your level of experience or will assist you in finding an accredited program.

Please contact one of our Sales Team to learn more!

*The experienced crew member is required to fill out a sailing resume to confirm that they have the necessary skills to sail in Turkey but is not required to have a sailing license.  If they do have a sailing license, they should take their original copies with them.

Cruising Permits

These are charged to bareboat and flotilla clients for sailing in Turkish waters and are approximately €85 per yacht.  This cost may change.
To sail in Greece and Turkey the cost is as follows:
In Turkey
Clearing out formality     €75
Clearing in formality        €75
Port tax (per person)      €14
In Greece
Clearing in formality      €115
Clearing out formality    €60

If you wish to sail between Greece and Turkey then please inform the base or the UK office in advance as original boat papers need to be obtained for the Greek Authorities.

Night Sailing

Night Sailing is not permitted; you must be moored at least one hour before sunset at all of our locations.

Cruising Area Limits

You may cruise anywhere between the ports of Kusadasi in the North West, and Antalya in the East.

Mooring Fees and Taxes

Mooring fees are charged in marinas and harbours, not in bays, and range from about €8 to €40 per boat. If you stop free of charge at a private jetty, it is expected that you will eat at that restaurant. Shower facilities are available at most restaurants for a small charge.

Area & Sailing

More information on the sailing in this area.

Charts & Pilot Book

All the charts and pilot books you will need for the sailing area are on board the yacht. Charts and pilot books can be purchased by mail order from the UK chandler Kelvin Hughes by contacting them direct on 02380 634911 or www.kelvinhughes.com.

Skippered Charter Information

The skipper’s time is booked from 12:00pm to 12:00pm in 24-hour periods. If you have reserved him for the first day of your charter and have a 6:00pm start, he will use this time to ensure he is happy with all aspects of the yacht and will be at the base to meet you upon your arrival. If you have reserved him for a later date on your charter he will start at 12:00pm on that day.

The skipper is responsible for the safety of the yacht at all times. He is not permitted to dive with you, nor leave the vessel overnight. He must conduct a safety brief with you before leaving the dock regardless of the duration of his contract with you.

For “check out charters” (anything less than the full duration of the charter) the check out skipper’s time is booked from 6:00pm to 6:00pm to allow for a meet and greet in the evening and go over basic systems, then a full day with you the next day. This skipper is required to give you a thorough briefing on all aspects of the yacht and dinghy in addition to assisting you with planning an itinerary for the trip and advising you how to contact the base, the return to base procedures and the emergency assistance procedures. It is suggested that you attend the scheduled chart brief that will be supplemented by the skipper during his time with you on the yacht. It is also suggested that you make it clear exactly what you want to cover…anchoring, docking, etc.

The skipper will be required to give you as much information as you require concerning the yacht and its systems, sailing skills and navigation in general.

The skipper fee does not include food or beverages for the skipper and are the responsibility of the client. It is suggested that you discuss this on the first day with the skipper and establish whether you will give the skipper cash for meals, whether you have included him in your provisioning or whether you will accommodate him as part of the group for meals ashore.

The skipper must have his own cabin. We prefer not to put the skipper in the bow due to the shared heads and size of the cabin. If you expect him to stay in the bow, please let us know well in advance so that we can choose the appropriate (small) skipper.

For one-day check out skipper’s it is your responsibility to get the skipper back to the base. If you prefer not to come back to the base you must pay for his expenses (ferry, taxi, etc.) to get him back.

The average tip for a skipper is 15 to 20% of the skipper’s fee. This is, of course, at your discretion.

Banks & Money Exchange

Currency

The local money is the Turkey New Lira (TRY).

Banks

The banks are open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 12:00 am and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. On Saturday from 11:00am to 2:00pm.
Due to the constantly changing exchange rate, we would not recommend that clients change currency until they are actually in Turkey. There are no limits on the amounts you can take in and out of the country, but the exchange rates are often more favourable in Turkey. Please note there are very high charges applied when changing traveller’s cheques in Turkey.

It is possible to change money at the airports.

Credit Card Information

Major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are accepted throughout Turkey for making transactions and payments, but may be subject to a surcharge. In addition, credit cards can be used for cash withdrawals at ATM machines, but expect to incur a charge for this service. Small retail outlets and private restaurants may not accept credit cards.

In addition, most ATM cards can be used at all Ziraat Bankasi and Common Point ATMs. The shared ATM network for all banks in Turkey is the Tel Nokta ATM network, which is similar to the Link Network in the UK.

Credit cards are not widely accepted in smaller villages and towns. Please be aware that Debit Cards are not accepted at the base for security deposits/deductible or any other transaction. Only credit cards can be used at the base – they accept MasterCard or Visa but do not accept American Express).

Please Note: Bases are unable to accept personal cheques and cannot give cash back on credit or debit (Switch/Delta) cards.

Currency can be exchanged commission free at any high street TUI TRAVEL retail travel agent on production of your Sunsail invoice. You can pre-order your currency from a TUI travel agent by telephoning them in advance on 0870 9005154 to find your nearest branch.

General Information

Language

The official language is Turkish, but you will also hear people speaking Kurdish, Armenian and Aramaic. In the tourist resorts you can usually get by with English and/or German.

Cost of living in Turkey

The cost of living in Turkey has risen in recent years and is now comparable to that of the UK. Service charges in Turkey are generally not included, but check when paying your bill.

Restaurants

Secret Garden: (Close to the Marina)  Bodrum Tel. No: +90 (0252) 313 1641
Sünger Pizza:   (Located opposite Marina) Bodrum, +90 (0252) 316 0854

Tipping

Tipping is standard and expected in all restaurants / bars and for other services undertaken during your holiday. The rule of thumb is generally 10-15% of the amount charged. Some establishments automatically add this onto the bill.

Shopping

When shopping in Turkey you may be offered receipts in shops far lower in value than the amount paid. Shops do this so that they can declare less tax. The Customs Officers at your home airports are well aware how much carpets, leather goods, and copperware are worth. If you declare a lower value, you may have the goods seized and a heavy fine imposed.

Shopping in Turkey is great, with open-air markets, covered Turkish bazaars and chic boutiques everywhere.  To name a few worthwhile purchases, brass, copper, ceramics, carpets, jewellery, kilims, leather apparel, meerschaum, silk and inlaid wooden items. Turkey produces a lot of wool and cotton, and manufactures a lot of excellent clothing from it.

Electrical, Phones & Music

Electricity

The standard voltage on all yachts is 12 volts. Electricity in Turkey is 220 Volts, and uses the standard European 2 pin plug. In order to use electronic equipment that is 220v you will need an inverter suitable for use in a cigarette lighter.

Mobile phones

Three companies have GSM mobile phone networks in Turkey - Turkcell, Vodaphone and Avea.  All three companies have nearly complete signal coverage of the country. You will need to activate international roaming on your contract.

Music/Ipods

All boats are fitted with a radio and CD player. If you wish to listen to your IPOD whilst sailing you will need to bring along an I-trip or FM radio transmitter.

Health & Safety

Illness or Injury

If you are taken ill and visit the doctor or hospital during your trip contact a member of Sunsail staff as soon as possible on either a lead boat or at a Sunsail base.
If you need to make a claim for curtailment due to illness, ask the base manager for assistance and contact your insurer’s emergency medical service immediately.
Your insurance company will assist with travel arrangements, advice and payment of bills.
Obtain receipts for any medication, treatment or transport you have to pay for and submit with your claim

Safety

All yachts are equipped with adult life jackets harnesses we leave it up to you to decide when personal safety equipment should be worn. We have a limited supply of children’s life jackets (age 4+ only) if you have your own children’s life jacket we would encourage you to bring it along.

We suggest that children who are not strong swimmers should not be allowed in a dinghy without a life jacket or buoyancy aid and that they should wear a buoyancy aid or harness when on deck. Children under the age of 16yrs should not operate an outboard engine and should be supervised at all times when in the dinghy.
