Whitstable Yacht Club

Welcome to the WYC

Whitstable Yacht Club is one of the oldest and largest sailing clubs in England. The Club is situated on the north coast of Kent where the Thames Estuary meets the North Sea. WYC offers sailing in sheltered waters at all times of the tide for catamarans, dinghies, and windsurfers with yachts in nearby creeks which dry out.

WYC Club Manager - Jeff Emerson

Jeff Emerson
After three weeks on the job, our new Office Manager Jeff Emerson is settling in. He's had a handover, met the Flag Officers, staff members and most of the key volunteers, and has attended the committee meetings held since he started. If you haven't already met him, by way of an introduction here's a bit of background from Jeff:
"I started my career as a watersports instructor in the stunning Corsican sunshine where I soon got the bug for sailing, windsurfing and water skiing, gaining qualifications with the RYA and BWSF. After spending a winter ski guiding in the Italian Alps, I gained the position of Assistant Manager for an activity Centre and in time progressed to Manager. I managed 80+ Staff looking after 400+ guests at 2 sites. I liaised with local and national authorities including the police, coastguard, sports governing bodies and councils. We ran courses in sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing, canoeing, archery, climbing, shooting and golf as well as hosting corporate events.
"I have had responsibility of managing a large team and delivering leisure activities and corporate events throughout London and the south of England. I managed a dedicated team of staff, volunteers and outside contractors to achieve, implement and develop our events and activities.
"I am looking forward to bringing my knowledge and experience to manage and develop WYC, bringing a bright and prosperous future."

I have placed the 2014 storage stickers on the table in the sea room. If you have paid for equipment storage, please come and collect your sticker(s) and place on your equipment or board rack as soon as convenient. Thank you. Membership/Sailing Secretary.

Committee Boat Progress

ColneCC7
More good news for Whitstable Yacht Club this week: In line with the plans agreed with the General and Sailing Committees, developed in consultation with the members, the subgroup formed to purchase a new Committee Boat has this week signed off plans and placed an order for a new Colne Catamaran CC7. There's still a lot of work to be done, but the new boat is expected to be in use for the 2014 sailing season. Until then, Perry will still be available for any events requiring Committee Boat starts before the new boat is delivered.
Thanks to Ian Wild, Stuart France, Jason Wild, John Cooper, Jull Fagg and Richard Earland for their hard work getting to this significant milestone!

New Club Manager

After a lot of good responses to our advertisements for a new club manager, we are pleased to announce that JEFFERY EMERSON has accepted the post having made a very creditable performance through the selection process. Jeffery lives locally, (near faversham), has extensive experience of large catering and social club management and is a keen sailor. He has been a water sports centre manager for Mark Warner, a windsurfing instructor and holds an RYA Level 2 power boat qualification. He will start with the club on 7th January, and I am sure you will all wish to make him feel welcome. Thanks to Richard Earland, Jill Fagg and Maureen Bush for conducting the candidate selection and interviews.

Winter series final race, Prize Giving and masts

It's the final race of the 2014 season this Sunday, with Winter Series Race 8 starting at 11am. The battle for the Laser class is a close one, with 3 boats vying for 1st place with only 3 points separating them. Will it be the current leader Steve Gray, Mark Holweger who won the first race of the series, or Charles Campion, just back from competing at the Laser Masters Worlds in Oman?
Following the race we'll be holding the prize giving for the Winter Series, so please come along to congratulate the sailors who braved the winter weather! And now we're firmly into Winter, can all members please drop the masts on their boats. As well as being a club rule for masts to be down over Winter, we've had a few storms already, with boats moving on the beach, and it's only going to get worse as the season moves on. To protect your equipment, and that of your neighbours it's important to make sure all masts are dropped and boats well tied down. If you are expecting to sail over Winter, so want to keep your mast up, please contact Sally in the office

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Sue Cannon on 30 November 2013.

Funeral Arrangements: The service will be held at 10.20am, Bluebell Hill, Medway Crematorium, Robin Hood Lane, Chatham, Kent ME5 9QT on Friday 13 December 2013. This will be followed by drinks at Whitstable Yacht Club at approximately 12 noon. A number of friends will be assembling at Whitstable Harbour at 0910 to travel to Bluebell Hill.
