The final day of racing was the day that the weather gurus really got it wrong. We awoke to a fresh westerly as opposed to the predicted light southwester. True to form Principal Race Officer Viv JAMES left his moorings before 09:00, the D Flag was dropped at 09:05 and the boats started launching in a wind touching 22 knots.
One race was sailed today to bring the regatta series total to 12 races sailed.
The windward-leeward course was laid just north of the harbour entrance close to the Oyster Farm. The offshore wind which was 5 degrees to the south of true west abated slightly to 20 knots and the last and final race for the 2007 Mirror World Championships started under the I Flag at 10:10 in a light chop. Anna MACKENZIE and Holly SCOTT (GBR), the Mirror World Champions, were still aggressive as ever at the start, but this time too aggressive as they scored their first OCS and worst possible score for the regatta. The harder conditions resulted in a few breakages as well as Dale MILLER (AUS) being hit over the head with the boom, and only 72 finishers.
South African America's Cup Shosholoza team member and Isivunguvungu coach, Sieraj JACOBS sailing with the 2006 Optimist National Champion, Ashwin DANIELS sailed a faultless race to gain first position, followed by Nick DAVIS and John COLLOVA (AUS) and in third were 2005 World Champions Ross KEARNEY and Adam MCCULLOUGH (IRL)
Significant for South Africa is that JACOBS and DANIELS are the highest placed South Africans of colour in any Sailing World Championship event. JACOBS, the gentleman of sailing, commented as follows to that piece of news, 'We are all the same and Ashwin and I, just like all the other sailors, worked hard for our results.'
The last day of sailing in Port Elizabeth put a smile on many sailors faces as they cried out to the bridge boat for more sailing and for the triangle sausage course. What a great end to an incredible regatta.
