Congratulations to Alison Dolan and Grainne Young from Blessington Sailing Club on winning the RS Feva Inland Championships!
The RS family (Fevas, 200s and 400s) arrived in Blessington Sailing Club on Saturday the 12th of a September for the 2013 RS Inlands to a warm welcome and absolutely loads of tea, coffee and delicious home made cakes!
Following a detailed briefing about where NOT to go on the lake (later demonstrated by the committee boat!), the 3 fleets launched into a brisk and shifty North Easterly.
Local boat Alison and Grainne came out of the blocks fast with three race wins out of three on the first day. In second, with three seconds, were Triona Hinkson and Katherine Kelly from the Royal St George. The first day was a classic example of having to keep the boat upright to get a result!
On the second day Alison and Grainne didn’t have it quite all their own way with Triona and Catherine and Lorcan Tighe/Cian Murphy from the National Yacht Club challenging for the top positions as the rest of the fleet got more acclimatised to sailing on the lake in slightly less breezy and shifty conditions than the day before.
In the end though, Alison/Grainne won well with Triona/Katherine holding on to second and Lorcan/Cian overtaking Rosemary Tyrrell and Roisin Foley (RIYC/RStGYC) for the final place on the podium.
Of the six boats taking part, the two boats from Greystones were in their first ever Feva event and, between the two boats contained three members of the Keogh family!
A most enjoyable closing event for the season and we look forward to seeing all of them back again for the first event next season.

Largest Feva Fleet this year!
18 Fevas competed in the RS Southerns last weekend in the Royal Cork Yacht Club in Crosshaven for the largest regional start of the season. 17 boats from Cork Harbour split between Monkstown Bay and Royal Cork with one visitor from the Royal Irish ably assisted with local knowledge!
Home club, Royal Cork’s Luke McGrath and Eoghan O’Regan won the first race in what was their first outing in a Feva but were soon ousted by RCYC Jill McGinley and Maeve O’Sullivan who in spite of a split jib, won the 2nd race. Monkstown’s Luke Fehilly and Shane Dunlea took the last race of the day in a dying breeze and a vicious tide which sorely tested the Fevas. Monkstown Bay’s Martha Fehily and Jenny O’Leary also performed well on Saturday with two seconds in the bag.
On Sunday, Jill and Maeve, armed with a new jib, dominated day two for the Fevas to win the event with another 3 bullets. Luke and Eoghan remained consistent to claim 2nd place overall and Monkstown’s David Hyland and Charlie Moloney came in third. A great event and marvellous to see so many Fevas on the start line again.
Interestingly, Maeve’s first event in a Feva was two years ago in the Nationals when she crewed for a visitor. There’s always an opportunity to crew for visitors if you make contact before the event. Keep an eye on the RS Feva Ireland Facebook page!

We look forward to seeing you all at the RS Inlands on the 12th and 13th of October at Blessington Sailing Club http://www.blsc.ie/Home.aspx
The three RS classes battled it out on the weekend of the 27th and 28th of April hosted by the Royal St George Yacht Club for the season's first event, the Eastern Championships. The event attracted a total entry of thirty five boats with nineteen RS400's, eleven RS200's and six Fevas. There was some challenging racing with the wind ranging from middling to quite challenging!
It was great to have so many Fevas out so early in the season and we hope the the numbers will build over the season as schools and exams finish.

The Fevas have been invited to join their larger siblings (RS 400s and RS 200s) at a sprint event in Greystones Sailing Club on Saturday the 22nd of June. This is great format event for getting used to Feva sailing with lots of short races and plenty of starts!

Irish RS Family Come Together for RS200, RS400 & RSFeva Circuit in 2013
The RSFeva Association have confirmed they will join the RS200 & RS400 fleets on the 2013 Irish RS Circuit.
An unofficial ‘RS Pathway’, has in recent years helped retain Greystones youth sailors and come to embody the ISA ‘sailing for life’ motto. Sailors from 5 to 55 years, of all skill levels across the 3 RS fleets are on the start line together for Club racing. Those at the ‘more experienced’ end of the fleet hope to emulate the example of Liam Donnelly (RNIYC), who in his sixties, is snapping at the transom of young Olympians and currently lies third in the competitive Ballyholme Icebreaker series.
This experience has prompted the RS200/400 and RS Feva Associations to come together for the RS Circuit. First gun will be at the Royal St George Yacht Club at the end of April and will continue throughout the season up and down the country concluding in Lough Ree in October.
The Irish RS200/400/& Feva National Championships will be hosted by the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club, a Club already enjoying the bigger RS boats yet new to the Feva. RNIYC, like other Clubs in the North and around the country, are looking for a doublehander alternative to the ISA/RYA Pathways to keep kids sailing. As the RS Fevas make inroads up North, we hope to see Ballyholme, North Down, Royal North and County Antrim Clubs being represented for the first time alongside the more seasoned Feva clubs up and down the country.
This Championship event will be the focal point of the first half of the Traveller Series for all 3 RS fleets in Ireland, boosted by a dramatic 10 new RS400 teams across Northern Ireland over the winter, including Irish Olympic 49er team Ryan Seaton and Matthew McGovern. The Olympic duo have taken the racing up to another level at the Ballyholme Icebreakers (when the weather allows!!) but already the fleet is responding, and Ryan and Matty are not having things all their own way.
10 Scottish teams are booked to come over using Stena Line’s helpful sponsorship discount, and several teams from the South of England and Midlands are also planning to attend. This could see a fleet of 35+ RS400s racing over three days of July 5-7.
Recent deliveries of 200s to Dun Laoghaire and a couple more due in Greystones will strengthen the Irish 200 class during 2013. Those who have trained or sailed through the winter in the DMYC Frostbites and Ballyhome Icebreakers will surely benefit from an early Nationals date. Greater challenges still are expected from the competitive UK visitors, as this event, with another in Carnac, forms the RS Eurocup for the RS200 and RS400. Dun Laoghaire Regatta also welcomes RS200/400 entries the following week and the second half of the season should prove interesting, with a battle on the seas for the Traveller Trophies across the three fleets.
Clubs and classes will be holding Coaching Clinics and Try Out sessions over the season. We look forward to more sailors enjoying the one design experience of the Irish RS Family with crews of all generations and genders racing together. Boat design allows seamless transition and progression up the fleets as skills develop. Owners are thrilled with boats that remain competitive over many years so it is boat handling, tactics and team work that win out every time.
