Bermuda's Alex Jones has been sailing competitively in the Men's RS:X for two years. Jones sailed up until the age of 17 before switching to triathlon. Now, 28, and back on the board, Jones is representing Bermuda and bidding to reach the London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition.
Jones is another beneficiary of the Perth 2011 Emerging Nations Programme, which was conceived to support and assist developing ISAF Member National Authorities in their bid to qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition.

"The ENP was a fantastic opportunity for me as I learnt Perth as a home port," said Jones. "I've spent my life sailing in Bermuda which offers one set of conditions. It was totally different to sail in Perth with the famous sea breeze that behaves in a different way to the wind I was used to.

"So in effect I was sailing in a way that made sense for a little oceanic island and not for a coastal sea breeze.

"It was a way to learn about the wind and to grow my skill in a really focused environment that I could never get at home."

A keen triathlete before switching to sailing, Jones believe the skills of becoming an accomplished triathlete can be applied to sailing, "The way you get good at triathlon is the way you get good at anything. It's through consistent work over a period of many years to grow your skill.

"The same is true here. I jumped on a board two years ago having not been on one since I was 17 and it's been a daily grind of making sure I do the work I need to do to get better.

"It's a long road but I'm very humbled to be here with guys winning Olympic Medals".
