The 2004 event is hosted by the Yacht Club Veleiros do Sul in Brazil. The racing area will be at the Baia da Pedra Redonda on the waters of the Guaíba Lake situated in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Registration and Measurement will take place from 21 to 24 January followed by a practice race on 25 before competition gets underway on 26 January. Seven races are scheduled and the prize giving ceremony will take place on 31 January.

Several Soling sailors with pedigree will be competing, including Daniel GLOMB and Renato Cunha from Brazil, George Wossala (HUN), Balazs Gyenes also from Hungary, Preben Asbojornod (NOR) and Gustavo Warburg from Argentina. Glomb won the Gaucho Championship last year and sailed at the Soling Class in the Savannah Olympics in 1996, Renato Cunha from Rio de Janeiro has twice been the Brazilian Soling champion in 2001 and 2002. Of the Europeans, Balazs GYENESE won the European Championship in 2003, George WOSSALA has been the World Master Champion three times and Preben ASBOJORNOD won the Norwegian Championship in 2002. Coming from the south the Argentine Gustavo WARBURG won the World Championship in 2001, finished fourth in 2002 and the South American Championship in 2003. Fellow Argentine, Martin BUSCH has been twice the winner of the Paul Elvström Trophy and finished third at the 2001 Worlds.

Also fighting for the title will be local sailor "Dodao" - (George NEHM) who finished fifth in the 2001 Soling Worlds, is the 2003 Brazilian & Argentine Champion and has won numerous other titles in the snipe class. Four time Olympian and double bronze medallist in the Tornado class Lars GRAEL (BRA) will also be competing, sailing with Marco Lagoa Eduardo Penido.

27 boats are lined up to start the first race, a special fleet where 40% of the boats were rebuilded in full from the 70' and 80'. Some particular new ones will take part in the event like the one is going to be used by Warburg/Celedoni/Smith a 99 boat prepared for Sydney 2000 or Glomb/Vergo/Gick who will using the Sydney 2000 olympic boat winner.

A small cup contest will take part on Friday where a battle between the Hungarians and Brazilians will be the main attraction.

The forecast for the weekend looks great with sunny days and breeze during the afternoon. Teams arriving earlier besides sailing will be able to enjoy the swimming pool and all club activities.
