Day two of the ISAF Grade 1, SPA Regatta brought practically the same weather conditions as Wednesday, the first day. Both wind speed and direction fluctuated which made it difficult for all competitors.
The most successful sailor at the SPA Regatta after two days is without a doubt Siren
SUNDBY (NOR). She finished first in all six races in the Europe class. Julien
BONTEMPS (FRA), Mistral Men, is still in the lead, but Dutch favourite Joeri van DIJK has got the same amount of points (7) discarding the worst result of both competitors.
In the 470 Men class Paul
FOERSTER and Kevin BURNHAM (USA), had a very good day. On day one the team ended in fourth place. Yesterday, they won all three races, placing them in the lead with a total of ten points. The first place in the 470 Women is in hands of the Dutch team of Lisa
WESTERHOF and Magriet MATTHIJSSE.
Fredrik
LOOF and Anders EKSTROM (SWE) live up to their reputation and are leading the Star Class. Leader in the Laser class is the Slovenian Zbogar VASILIJ, he won all yesterday's races.
After two days of racing, all races have been sailed. Competition is fierce as some teams still need to satisfy national Olympic nomination criteria in order to be selected for the Olympic Games in Athens in August.
Other teams are sailing a sail off between two or more teams and others are in their final preparation for the Games. The SPA Regatta competition, with over 60 nations participating, will finish Sunday 30 May 2004.
