Arrving in Poland on Monday morning, Russell spent time mixing with the youngster in the boat park during the day, before giving a video presentation in the evening, followed by an open question session. An exciting conclusion to a great day of racing.

Out on the water, some young stars are consolidating their past performances, as they prepare themselves to equal or surpass previous years' results. Performing outstandingly and representing the host nation, Zofia KLEPACKA (POL) has the cleanest scoreline with 6 bullets counting to her overall points, after 1 discard (a second place) in the 7 races sailed. Zofia, who will be moving onto Athens in a few weeks time, has already claimed the Gold at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship for three successive years - in 2001, 2002 and 2003 - and prior to that Polish team mates claimed the youth world title in 1999 and 2000. Ranked number 32 on the ISAF World Sailing Rankings, Zofia looks set to be at the top of the podium come the Closing Ceremony on Friday.

Looking at form for the Nations' Trophy, which will be presented to the top performing nation, the defending holder Australia is looking good with three sailors currently in medal positions. However, on current results, the Australian sailors will be keeping their eyes closely trained on Great Britain and France. Team GBR currently leads three of the seven events, and holds medal positions in four events, whilst France holds medal positions across four events.

Wednesday 13 July is a layday for the 353 competitors from 52 nations, before going into the final three days tomorrow.

420 Girls - 7 Races, 1 Discard
The fleet is led by the defending champion, Elise RECHICHI with new crew Tessa PARKINSON. They have already established a conservative points margin of 13 points over the chasing German pair of Lydia KOPPIN and Kristina KUMMER, and have led the Championship from day 1. The German crew will be pleased to have converted their fifth place to the bronze medal position. The third placed Swiss crew, who went into Day 3 in second overall, will be looking hard to at least retain this position and improve on their seventh overall from the 2003 Championship.

The ISAF Athlete Participation Programme (APP) is funding two teams in the 420 Girls event, the South African and Cuba teams. Cuban sailors are making their first ever appearance at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship, with Anneris FALCON and Yisel SUAREZ putting in a good performance. The South African pairing of Bronwen KLAAS and Bridget CLAYTON have placed two top 10 results, and are lying 17 overall.

420 Boys - 7 Races, 1 Discard
Equalling their team mates in the 420 Girls fleet, Nathan OUTTERIDGE and Iain JENSEN, are successfully defending their Championship title, and have established a 20 point margin after 7 races.

Brothers Mathieu and Thomas RAHIER (FRA) are chasing hard, but even at this stage will be hard pushed to knock the Aussies from their dominant position, and will be concentrating on consolidating their position ahead of Thomas SUMNER and Mark PINEDA (BRA).

APP funded crews from Argentina, South Africa and Puerto Rico are racing well and benefiting from coaching and debriefing sessions provided by ISAF World Youth Sailing Trust coach Jim SALTONSTALL (GBR).

Multihull - 7 Races, 1 Discard
Disappointment for Guatemala, who had led the fleet from day 1, as the British pair of Tom PHILIPS and Jonathan COOK claim the mantle after a solid 2,1,3 performance. The top three crews all carry exceptionally low scorelines, and aside from a DSQ apiece have between them secured the top three places across the seven races so far held.

Julien VILLION and Martin BATAILLE sit ahead of the Guatemalan crew by 1 point. The Championship looks to be a three-boat race, despite there being another 5 races to sail, and the podium looks to be secure between these three crews.

Juan MAEGLI and Jason HESS are beneficiaries of the ISAF APP funding, and will be delighted at this performance after Juan's fourth place at the 2004 Hobie 16 World Championship, which marked his first appearance on the international circuit.

Single-handed Dinghy Girls - 7 Races, 1 Discard
The top three placed sailors are all veterans of the World Championship, having competed in 2003.

Sarah STEYAERT (FRA) has also dominated her event from the outset, with three bullets to her credit. Chasing hard are Charlotte DOBSON (GBR) and Paige RILEY (USA), who finished fourth and first respectively in 2003. Going further back to 2002, when the Byte was used for the event, Paige and Sarah were there again, placing third and fifth respectively - so there are certainly old scores to settle.

With three medals to her credit, and this her last Youth Worlds, Paige will be aiming for the top, whilst Sarah and Charlotte will be keen to take their first medals.

Behind these three, the next bunch of three sailors, placing fourth through to sixth should not be dismissed from the podium and have every chance of converting their positions.

There are three sailors on the ISAF APP in the Laser Radial fleet, Cecilia CARRANZA SAROLI (ARG), Jessica HOGG (RSA) and Beth GERTRUDE (SEY), with Cecilia up in fourth and racing hard.

Single-Handed Dinghy Boys - 7 Races, 1 Discard
Nick THOMPSON (GBR) has made steady progress to now lead the fleet overall, converting from his overnight position of second. Home grown Norbert WILANDT (POL), has been ousted from the top three to sit in fourth, with SIMON GROTELUSCHEN (GER) and Simon MORGAN (AUS) also up at the top.

Both Norbert and Simon GROTELUSCHEN are past competitors, with Norbert taking the silver in 2003, and Simon placing eleventh. Experience counts, and these sailors are proving it as they lead at the pinnacle Youth event in the world.

2002 ISAF Youth Worlds bronze medallist, Tonci STIPANOVIC (CRO), is surprisingly sitting mid-fleet suffering from a BFD and DSQ, but when the second discard comes into play his position will dramatically improve. With significant experience under his belt including winning the Laser 4.7 World Championship in 2002 and Laser Radial Youth World Championship in 2003, keep an eye on him.

Ten sailors in the fleet are on the APP, including Latvia who is making their first ever appearance at an ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship.

Windsurfer Girls - 7 Races, 1 Discard
Enough said already on Zofia's outstanding performance, and with the gold medal already looking to be heading her way, what is happening behind this outstanding Polish sailor.

Anne Sophie LE PAGE (FRA) who placed fifth in 2002 is looking good with a scoreline of top three places after 1 discard, and is currently ranked 73 in the world. Behind her Italy's unranked Laura LINARES (ITA) has also marked herself as a force to be reckoned with, displaying top five finishes throughout.

Cuba's Zoe BARRIOS FLEITAS is the only recipient of the APP in the fleet, and is placed eleventh overall.

Windsurfing Boys - 7 Races, 1 Discard
An exciting move up into pole position for Richard POTTER (GBR) who had been waiting patiently in second, but with a 5 and 2 in yesterday's races he achieved a 1 point margin, to remove Federico ESPOSITO (ITA).

2004 marks Federico's second appearance at the Youth Worlds, placing 14 last year in Madeira, Portugal. Both Richard and the third placed Kamil LEWANDSKI (POL) are newcomers. Kamil led the fleet after the opening day and had the hopes of his nation alight, but with only 5 points between the top 3 it is anybody's Championship.

Several of the fleet are making repeat appearances at the ISAF Youth Worlds, including Corey PLANT (AUS), Anthony MOURIER (FRA), Nanev VESSELIN (BUL), and Fernando PASQUALIN (BRA). Along with two others in the fleet, Nanev is on the ISAF APP and he will be representing his nation in Athens in August.
