African Laser 4.7 Youth Championship 2010
Alger, Algeria

The inaugural African Laser 4.7 Youth Championship took place from the National Sailing Centre in Alger, Algeria from 26 April to 2 May.
The winning sailors are rewarded with the opportunity to represent their nations at the Youth Olympic Games to be held in Singapore from 14 - 26 August 2010.

The Championship consisted of a series of ten races sailed in the Laser 4.7 class. There were 18 entries from nations including: Algeria, Tunisia, Maroc, Kenya, Mozambique and Sudan.

Racing took place in light and variable conditions under sunny skies. The ten race series was sailed using trapezoid courses and the race committee spent some long hours on the water to keep the regatta on schedule.

In the Boys division Benouali Mohamed representing Algeria sailed by far the most consistent regatta scoring four race wins and with his two worst results dropped, finished the regatta with a total of 13 points.

The battle for second place on the podium was far closer with another Algerian Nedjari Bilel tied on points with Anis Lamjid from Tunisia. Nedjari won on the countback system and by virtue of scoring two bullets to Anis's one.

The first female sailor was Hammiche Lamia also representing the home country Algeria. Hammiche finished a very creditable fifth overall winning the final race of the competition to finish with 39 points, 23 ahead of her nearest rival Lara Granier of Kenya. These are the two girls who qualify for places at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

Alastair Fox, Events Manager at the International Sailing Federation offered his congratulations to the Federation Algerienne de Voile for their efforts in organizing and managing a successful championship.

These youth sailors will now be turning their attention to training for the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in a few months time.
