World Speed Sailing Record Council

With a variety of record attempts currently underway or just completed. John Reed, Council Secretary to the WSSRC sent us this update on their progress.
Subject to ratification, Gary Keegan broke the Monohull Around Ireland record - previously set during the Round Ireland Race - in a time of 75 hrs 27 min 33 sec, The yacht, a Whitbread 80' Maxi with a crew of 27 is sponsored by the Irish Independent newspaper.

Jan Hamester GER has set off on a monohull Cadiz to San Salvador attempt. 40ft yacht with 2 crew. We have researched the Discovery Route race records and can find no monohull time recorded (there have been 3 races, but only one which had monos and that was a different route - Benalmadena - Palos - San Salvador - Santa Domingo - so, if successful, this will be setting a benchmark.

Alessandro di Benedetto arrived safely in Guadeloupe aboard his 20ft open sport catarmaran, sailed singlehanded. Starting from the Canaries. He crossed the Atlantic in 28 days 11 hours 36 minutes and 2 seconds.

Jan Luc Van den Heede reports he is ahead of Phillipe Monet's schedule (the current record holder) on his Round the World single handed Westabout attempt.

Macquarie Innovation have wound up their outright speed project for this year. Simon McKeon reports that on the last of the extended days - 7 December - they briefly enjoyed"almost ideal" conditions, but it did not last long enough to be effective. On one run, although "the foils were not at the optimum setting," they "exceeded 47K," but not for 500 metres, and then the wind changed.
