Expert Olympic Garda 2005
Riva Del Garda, Trento, Italy

Lake Garda, Italy and it's famous Ora wind, was yesterday kind to the sailors battling for the ISAF Grade 2 Expert Olympic Garda Eurolymp. Several sailors took advantage of the conditions to produce faultless performances, one of them being of ISAF World Sailing Rankings' number one, Rafa TRUJILLO (ESP), whose three bullets launched him to the top of the Finn leaderboard.
Early yesterday morning, around 1030 hours local time, some wind begun to blow across the Garda, but it was the Vinessa wind, blowing south to north-west, a bit sideways on, making for a perfect regatta. The Ora wind begun to blow a bit later and the Committee called all competitors on water.

Of the overnight leaders four remain at the top of their respective leaderboards. Sally BARKOW, Carrie HOWE and Debbie CAPOZZI (USA) look well in control of the Yngling fleet with four bullets and a second place putting them clear at the top of the leaderboard. It is much the same story with Pietro SIBELLO and his brother, Gianfranco (ITA), who have five wins and a second place in the 49er fleet, to end the day as one of three Italian leaders.

The most impressive results across the competition have come from Andrey KIRILYUK and Valery USHKOV (RUS). Fourth in the recent ISAF Grade 1 Semaine Olympique Française and second in March's ISAF Grade 2 Barcelona Olympic Sailing Week, the Russian pair have a perfect five bullets from five.

A winner in Barcelona back in March, Larissa NEVIEROV (ITA) is continuing her form of the opening day, with a bullet in the day's final race meaning she holds on to her lead in the Laser Radial. Behind her new ISAF World Sailing Rankings' number one, Keamia RASA (CAN) is closing in after taking bullets in the first two races of the day.

ISAF World Sailing Rankings' number one and 2004 Olympic silver medallist, Rafa TRUJILLO (ESP), put in a flawless performance in the Finn, taking bullets in all three of the day's races to move three points ahead of Hyères winner, Emilios PAPATHANASIOU (GRE). These two are well clear of the rest of the fleet, with runner up in Hyères, Michael MAIER (CZE), having a mediocre day to leave him sixth overall.

Aron LOLIC (CRO) has overtaken Hyères winner, Tom SLINGSBY (AUS) to lead the Laser fleet. Diego NEGRI (ITA), a winner twice this year already, in Barcelona and at the ISAF Grade 3 Laser Europa Cup, is just a point off the lead. Olympic bronze medallist, Vasilij ZBOGAR (SLO), searching for the Rankings' points that will lift him above Paul GOODISON (GBR) at the top of the ISAF World Sailing Rankings, lies in fourth place overall.

After an excellent start to his Star campaign with a third and a first on Tuesday, 1996 Olympic champion in the Finn, Mateusz KUSZNIEREWICZ (POL), did not start yesterday's three races. Luca MODENA and Sergio LAMBERTENGHI (ITA) took full advantage sweeping to three wins to end the day well clear at the top of the leaderboard.

In the 470 women fleet, Sylvia VOGL and Carolina FLATSCHER (AUT) have not made a false move since finishing sixth in race one. Four bullets in a row put them four points clear of Yngling ISAF World Sailing Rankings' number six, Giulia CONTI and her new crew Giovanna MICOL (ITA). In fourth place, Siren SUNDBY and Karianne MELLEBY (NOR) have continued to score well, as the 2004 Olympic gold medallist in the Europe becomes more and more accustomed to the double-handed dinghy.

After a bullet in the final race of the day, Australians Mathew BELCHER and Nick BEHRENS are tied on points with Enrico FONDA and Pietro ZUKKETTI (ITA) at the top of the 470 men leaderboard. Breathing down their necks after an impressive day's sailing are ISAF World Sailing Rankings' number ones, Gabrio ZANDONA and Francesco DELLA TORRE (ITA).

Racing continues today with the final races scheduled for Saturday 14 May.
