The biggest event in the 2011 international sailing calendar will be held from 3-18 December off the Fremantle coast.

The ISAF Sailing World Championships will feature 1,400 of the world's top sailors and 850 boats from 80 nations competing in ten Olympic sailing events. An estimated 75 percent of Australia's Olympic competitors will be decided at the World Championships.

The broadcast will include 30 hours of coverage featuring live racing as well as daily highlight packages of the action on and off the shore.

Perth2011 Event Director John Longley described the Network Ten agreement as a huge boost to the sport of sailing in Australia.

"With the coverage planned by Network Ten, sports lovers around the country will have the opportunity to follow the excitement of live sailing, the fortunes of individual Australian and international athletes and to see and feel the buzz that this event is bringing to Perth," Mr Longley said.

The latest technology advances will bring a new and exciting edge to Network Ten's television coverage. Electronic positioning graphically plots the progress of the boats around the course and on-deck cameras will provide viewers with a crew's eye view.

Executive Director of Eventscorp, David van Ooran, said, "This is an exciting outcome for the State as it will showcase Western Australia as an extraordinary sailing destination to a national audience."

In addition to Network Ten's Australian coverage, the Perth2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships are being televised internationally from a broadcast centre at Fremantle's Bathers Bay.

Spectator vantage points along Fremantle's South Mole, Bathers Beach and Challenger Harbour will provide amazing views for the anticipated thousands of visitors who will watch as the fleets come close to shore in the final medal races in Bather's Bay.

"This is going to be one of the most accessible sailing events the world has seen," Mr Longley said.

"The Network Ten coverage means that our potential audience extends from the shores of Fremantle to almost every television set throughout Australia," he added.
