Defending champion and regatta host, University of Hawaii is in second place with 146 points. St. Mary's College of Maryland follows closely with 148 points.

Beautiful weather greeted the sailors for 8 races in each division. Fourteen races have now been completed, with four more scheduled for tomorrow. Conditions were similar to yesterday's racing with eighty-degree air and water temperatures, and 5-15 knot winds. The breeze began with
southerly thermal winds before northeast tradewinds filled in during the afternoon. Races have been run from the Honolulu Community College Marine Education and Training Center. A variety of courses have been used, all variations of windward-leewards or triangles. Sailors are racing Vanguard Flying Juniors (FJs) provided by the hosts. Vanguard Sailboats (Portsmouth, R.I.) is a partner in the ICSA Growth and Development Project.

Old Dominion University last won the Women's title in 1987. With a 27-point lead, they are on the verge of winning their third championship. Coach Mark Zagol (Plymouth, Mass.) said, "We're certainly a heavy air team. They said the tradewinds were coming, so we trained for heavy air." In the A-division, senior skipper Sally Barkow (Nashotah, Wis.), a returning All-American, has teamed with sophomore crew Cara Gibbons-Neff (Annapolis, Md.) and junior crew Debbie Capozzi (Bayport, N.Y.). Their 50-point total gives them a 14-point lead in division. With 69 points, the Monarchs in fourth place in B-division. Junior skipper Corrie Clement (Metarie, La.), who received Honorable Mention distinction last year, has sailed with freshman Anna Tunnicliffe (Perrysburg, Ohio) and junior Elizabeth Bower (Fairport, N.Y.)

University of Hawaii coach Jesse Andrews (Kaneohe, Hawaii)said, "early on we were sailing really well, but we had a capsize due to the shifting winds. We're still within reach if things go our way tomorrow." The Rainbow Wahine won last year's contest in Cambridge, Mass. Senior Molly O'Bryan (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Sarah Hitchcock (South Dartmouth, Mass.), both returning All-Americans, are second in the A-division with 64 points. Hawaii's B-division team is in fifth place with 82 points. Sophomores Renee Decurtis (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Jennifer Warnock (San Diego, Calif.) have skippered, while senior Melody Torres (Bakersfield, Calif.) and sophomore Lindsay Peters (Fargo, N.D.) crewed.

St. Mary's College of Maryland is in third place after the conclusion of today's racing. Junior skipper Ali Sharp (Gatlinburg, Tenn.) said, "As they always are, nationals are full of ups and downs." The Seahawks will need to remain determined if they hope to overtake the leaders tomorrow. Sharp has sailed with sophomore Melissa Deveney (Frederick, Md.) and senior Sarah McCarron (Chicago, Ill.) in the A-division. With 80 points, they are in fourth. In the B-Division junior skipper Jamie Smith (West River, Md.)
teamed with senior Leah Anderson (Larchmont, N.Y.) and sophomore Genevieve Parr (Baltimore, Md.). They are third in division with 68 points. Sharp, Smith and Anderson are returning All-Americans.
