The giant cat crossed the finish line between Le Cre'ach lighthouse on the island of Ouessant and Lizard Point at 16:13:45 GMT yesterday afternoon having spent the last day held up by light winds.

They completed the round the world race course in an incredible 64 days 8 hours 37 minutes and 24 seconds. This is 7 days 5 hours 44 minutes and 44 seconds less than the previous record set by Olivier de Kersauson's trimaran "Sport Elec" in 1997.

Throughout their two month passage the giant catamaran sailed 28,035 miles at an average speed of 18.15 knots, although this distance included going majorly off course outbound in the South Atlantic and on the return home in the south and north Atlantic. The Jules Verne Trophy course is usually considered to be around 26,000 miles.

Peyron's crew for the voyage consisted of Gilles Chiorri (navigator/technical director/watch leader), Herve Jan (trimmer and watch leader), Nick Moloney (watch leader), Yann Elies (helmsman/fittings/sails), Sebastien Josse (helmsman/mechanic), Ronan le Goff (grinder), Benoit Briand (trimmer), Jean-Baptiste Epron (cameraman), Florent Chastel (rigger), Vladimir Dzalda Lyndis (mechanic and diver) and Yves le Blevec (grinder and boat builder).

Commenting from on board Australian crewman Nick Moloney said: "I am absolutely stoked that we have pulled this off. The guys were fantastic and even when we had major problems with the mast we never gave up."

Aside from the round the world record Orange also wracked up the following records:

1- Ushant ­ Cape of Good Hope in 18 days, 18 hours and 40 minutes
2- Ushant ­ Cape Leeuwin in 29 days, 7 hours and 22 minutes
3- Cape Leeuwin - Cape Horn in 12 days, 19 hours and 30 minutes
4- Ushant ­ Cape Horn in 42 days, 2 hours and 52 minutes
5- Ushant ­ Equator in 53 days, 4 hours and 49 minutes
6- Equator ­ Ushant in 11 days, 03 hours and 48 mn
7- Cape Horn ­ Ushant in 22 days, 05 hours and 45 minutes

Orange then proceeded from the finish line to the Rade de Brest where they moored up at the Port du Commerce last night to start the celebrations.
