Veal - Four Out of Four

Moth World Championship
Melbourne, Australia

Racing at the Moth World Championships Day 4 at Sail Melbourne was initially postponed once again by Black Rock Yacht Club today, as strong winds, peaking at 35 knots at times, swept Port Phillip Bay.
On a brisk day in Melbourne, with high winds and seas, most Sail Melbourne events were either in postponement or abandonment mode, more due to swirling high seas than the winds, which were mostly in the 20-25 knot region, but gusted up to 35 knots at times.

However, by afternoon, a lull finally and race organisers were able to get Race 5 away - and just as well - for as quickly as the winds gusted to 35, they died just as quickly, forcing organisers to abandon due to lack of wind!

No matter, Rohan VEAL (VIC) the Foiler from Black Rock, just seems unbeatable. He won his fourth race on the trot from John ILETT (WA), the foil designer, with 2005 Australian Moth champion and conventional Moth sailor, Les THORPE home third. The wind had eased to around 10 knots for their race, but by the time of writing, it was back and moving up the scale again.

Overall, Veal has a huge 16 point lead after only four races, from Simon Payne (GBR) on 20 points after his worst race - he was 14 today, with his countryman Adam MAY (GBR) in third after his 'shocker' - a 16.

Mark ROBINSON (SIN), is equal fourth - (he suffered today also with a 15) with the first 'conventional' sailor, Les THORPE - both just one point in arrears of third place.

No race drop comes into play until sailors have completed 5-6 races and organisers are hoping to sail at least four races tomorrow with the Worlds ending on Saturday.

Provisional top five after four races:

Pos Name Nation Points
1 Rohan VEAL AUS 4
2 Simon PAYNE GBR 20
3 Adam MAY GBR 26
4 Mark ROBINSON SIN 27
5 Les THORPE AUS 27
