Lough Derg Yacht Club at Dromineer, Tipperary, has been awarded the title of the Irish Sailing Club of the Year 2005. The Award, jointly sponsored by Mitsubishi Motors and the Irish Independent, went to the club in recognition of it's outstanding achievements in the sailing arena in 2004.
Founded in 1835, the successful lakeside club has often punched above it's weight, despite being situated some distance from the main population centres.

Several seasons of national and international sailing success by Lough Derg YC members have now been matched by the opening of an impressive new club house, which hosted the staging of one of last season's major international events, the Mirror Dinghy Europeans, attracting 123 boats.

Commodore Niamh McCUTCHEON and her team took this in their stride, while maintaining the sense of community which is at the heart of any successful club. The club is also involved with the sailing programme at nearby Carrig School, whose headmaster Liam MALONEY is a former club Commodore.

Lough Derg YC is the 26th winner of the annual Mitsubishi Motors/Irish Independent Sailing Club of the Year, which was devised to honour and encourage the efforts of sailing clubs and associations nationwide.
